Adhering to conditions of the Israeli cease fire, Egypt has begun installing cameras and motion detectors along the Gaza border to stop Palestinian militants from smuggling weapons. A focal point of these installations is on the underground tunnels that were used to move arms, food and medicine across borders. Along with American, French and German support, Egypt has began installing the equipment along the 14km (8 mile) stretch of border. The US has contributed $32 million for equipment and has supplied engineers to provide technical assistance.

The tunnels were a primary target for the Israelis during the conflict and as a result many have been damaged and are un-usable. Hamas and Palestinians say that the tunnels are a vital system needed to obtain basic necessities so long as the borders to Egypt remain closed.
