George Mitchell resigns as US envoy to Middle East
President Barack Obama has announced the resignation of the US special envoy to the Middle East, George Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell who is 77 has led the administration’s effort to kick start a fail peace talk in the Middle East for the past two years. President Obama said Mr. Mitchell had always insisted he will only serve that amount of time in the position. The resignation was a few months in the making but the time is still interesting. Next week could be a key Middle East moment for Barack Obama. He will make a speech about his Middle East strategy; he will also hold talks with the king of Jordan and the Israeli Prime minister. In a statement announcing Mr. Mitchell's departure, President Obama said the US remained committed to peace. Mr. Mitchell had his view of peacemaking but the process was driven by the white house and it is likely that the two no longer agree on how to proceed.
