Russian soldiers have shot and killed a Georgian police officer at a checkpoint, a day after they agreed to withdraw from Georgia proper in a treaty with the EU.

A Georgian policeman was shot and killed on Wednesday near a Russian checkpoint in Georgia, Georgia's Interior Ministry said.

The ministry called it the first law enforcement or military casualty since the cease-fire between Russia and Georgia last month.

The incident, which Georgia called an "attack," occurred in the village of Karaleti -- just a few hundred meters south of a Russian checkpoint, the ministry said, adding that the shooting came from the direction of the checkpoint.

Russian authorities had no immediate comment.
