Georgia Pulls Troops Out of Iraq

Georgia has today pulled out some of its troops in Iraq, Baghdad reports, to consolidate the army at home.

BAGHDAD (AFP) — Georgia's 2,000 strong contingent in Iraq began to return home on Sunday to redeploy in the conflict in its breakaway province of South Ossetia, a US military spokesman said.

"Flights have in fact begun today and Georgian forces are redeploying," US military press spokesman Major John Hall told AFP.

"We are supporting the Georgian military units that are in Iraq in their redeployment to Georgia so that they can support requirements there during the current security situation."

Christina 123, I like this story. It's good stuff.

The American surgists won't like this news.

I'm sure the US can quickly make up the difference by just writing another big fat check to Blackwater for about 2000 more of their highly-trained, well-disciplined peace-keepers ...

The US won't like it, because it may also mean that Russia will blockade access to key points in the Caspian Sea and Black Sea.  Unless a major world power, such as the USA successfully gets the Russians to "back off", we may see US troops deployed away from Iraq and Afghanistan as well.

World leaders will not be pleased, especially as Russia have blocked Georgia's attempt to have a seat on NATO (which Russia has and so have the ear of the world in that respect).

Russia have obviously had this carefully planned strategically so I cannot see them backing off, except by force.

Thanks for the flag, Emilio Lizardo!

I don;t think it matters too much numbers wise.  An ally pulling out is more important at that level, but with the circumstances it is a non-issue.  The Georgia-Russia tiff is an EU problem.

I doubt it's a "tiff" and I doubt it is an "EU problem".  This has clearly been carefully planned by Russia and the Opening Day at Beijeing was a good time to sneak in by the back door, when the world's eyes were elsewhere..

By Eu problem, I mean the pipeline will affect them more than anyone.

Christina 123, I like this story. It's good stuff.

It appears not only are they pulling out, but they may be flown back home using US transport planes.  I don't think anything is confirmed yet, but Georgia seems to think that is the plan.  I wonder how Russia will take that news.

I guess it looks like the US already has.

Georgia is withdrawing their elite troop who are occupying Iraq to defend Georgian territory that is occupied by Russia., what a strange world.

No country should provoke a regime change in other country (?), what a strange news.

I strongly beleive that to me the world a better place to live , United Nations should be empowered and in full control of this world including big power and super power.
