A dispute is flaring up between the conservative German chancellor Angela Merkel and her Social Democrat (I guess it is just a code name these days, given their policies) coalition partners.
Subject: Should Barack Obama be granted the right to speak at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin Germany.
Merkel says 'No'.
Social Democrats say 'Yes'.

What is the occasion? The issue and in what capacity?
Please do elaborate!

@Paschen have you listened to the audio? Might be clarifying some of your questions. Please let me know if the Audio does not work for you.

Can not do that at this time! Sorry! No speaker!
at 23:13 on July 9th, 2008
Markus, the video to the story does not appear to be available.

@Rhonda thanks for the hint. Since I mailed the story, I have no means of monitoring it.
An altrnative source for the audio should be available here:

Many greetings,

You are very welcome, Markus! I will check out the link and get back in a moment.

Markus Schlegel, I like this story. It's good stuff.
at 00:02 on July 10th, 2008
Well, I am rather disapointed here since there is no writ up and not details, video should only be used to complement not to be the main story! I still have no clue what this is all about nor why there is a flag here!?
at 00:04 on July 10th, 2008
Markus, for some reason not all of my comment posted -- I copied and pasted the link to my browser and was successful! A very interesting audio (opinion), indeed! I would suggest that you insert the link in your story, if possible, and remove the NP Video. Thanks again for posting!

Thank you Rhonda! I cannot look at videos here they take to much power and it takes to long to down load them! Can you tell me what this is all about?

Bloggi agrees, and sets forth his Opinion and the reasons therefore (in audio), that Senator Obama should be granted the right to speak at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Germany.

BG is a big thing for Germans and has Political Repercution on an International level! Important here would be, what is the Occation and under what capacity?
This is like speaking at the Oval Office in sort! Thank you Rhonda for the info, Much Appreciated!

You are very welcome, Paschen.
at 02:13 on July 10th, 2008
@Paschen Well, depends which way you look at it. In this case, it was supposed to be an audio comment with text as teaser only. There would be little point in listening if I put up a transcript here, which - due to special circuastance on my end - would be impossible @ this time.

@Paschen Germans are a bit risk averse, I know but chances are that Obama will be elected next President.
So instead of turning him away, pea-counting whether he is president (yet) or not seems missing out on a chance to start off fabulously into German American relations.
Of course, Mc Cain is welcome, though I doubt he will get a big audience with his message.
And, on a more personal note, I think we need to do all we can to end the Bush nightmare by not helping to add more Mc Cain years. Bomb bomb bomb Iran was not exactly a good joke out of his mouth, but maybe revelatory.

It looks like our rendering system did something mean to your file, so I checked it out via the link above. Nice work.

What I don't understand is why Obama and McCain are globe hopping as part of their campaigns. Personally, it seems silly to me if they are doing the "look presidential" tryouts.
However, the campaign already has descending into a spitting contest on both sides so I guess the ludicrous takes on the look of normalcy.
Maybe they are thinking this is American Idol.

Also, more time abroad means less domestic scrutiny!
at 06:19 on July 10th, 2008
Jordan, art thou a cynic in this new era of hope and change (as declared by both sides, though one said it before the other, but I am not going to say which so people will have to research it - chuckle)?
at 01:34 on July 11th, 2008
I still believe that Video alone has no place here on NP, it belongs on UTUBE! Text and commentary would be nice here!
Once Obama is President he may speak at the BG in Berlin not before though!

Paschen - try doing a search - you'll find my article for:
http://www.nowpublic.com/world/july-24-obama-visit-berlin-may-make-speech-brandenburg-gate
which has exerpts from two local (berlin) english language papers about and what Obama would be speaking about and some additional details on when and some also on the debate between the Berlin Mayor (who wants Obama) and Merkel (the president of Germany who doesn't want him at the Brandenburg Gate.)
Thanks Markus for this. :) Oh - and just fyi, the MLK I have a dream speech was the end of August.
at 08:37 on July 11th, 2008
Hello Phoenixrose,
thanks for the info. This will be a good lesson. German newsmedia had it that this was supposed to be the anniversary of MLK.
Looks I was a bit light handed here. So thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Perhaps Germans will spot what most Americans have missed. He uses Inflamatory speech, just like Hitler.
at 14:29 on July 11th, 2008
Markus, I missed it too. Thanks Phoenixrose! Nevertheless, it may have been interpreted that Obama's apparent efforts to deliver a speech on the steps of Bradenburg could be compared to Martin Luther King's rally on the steps of the Washington Monument in 1963.

White House refuses comment on row over Obama's Berlin speech
WASHINGTON (AFP) - The White House Friday refused to comment on reports it told top German officials it opposed the idea of Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama giving a speech at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate.
"I'm not going to comment on any conversations," said White House press secretary Dana Perino.
"We have no view on the locations of candidates' speeches or events. Our position is that the candidates have to make their own decisions."
German media reports this week suggested that a Bush administration official took a German official to task at the G8 summit in Japan over reports the Illinois Senator was mulling the use of the Gate as a backdrop for his visit.
The office of German Chancellor Angela Merkel earlier denied she had been put under pressure by the White House over the itinerary of Obama's visit on July 24 and said she was delighted that he was coming to Germany.

Germany is not open minded ! !
Fu.k You ! Sorry !
I´m from Germany, heard about Obama should visit.
Germany is 100% Nazi. They would appreciate attention from Obama , for feeling more important.
But they are fu..ing Nazi, which shouldn´t get his visit at this time.
The foreign people in Germany feel bad about the idea !
and they love America. Just they do, no other.
It´s likely he was visiting Germany in 1933.
Nothing changed.
Foreigners haven´t chances.
I may forgive Obama.
However, he should stay away from here !
He may visit any other place, but hi shouldn´t visit the stupid Nazi.
Italy, or whatever, any other place !
I´d like to kick his ass, if he won´t listen.
So he better change plans,
cause I'm strong
FU.. YOU !!!!!!!! ALL !!!
(ok, sorry again)
