German Government Continues to work on Opel Solution

Early on this year it was thought that a deal had been in place for the sale of the German GM Automaker Opel to Magna Canada. There was some involvement by Russian partners. GM prefers the Belgique Financial firm RHJ International.

The German Government is still hopeful that the Auto Manufacturer Opel will be sold to an investor. Klaus Vater, Vice Government spokesperson said on Wednesday that there had been no movement on this issue by the US Car manufacturer GM.

Further talks are scheduled, as early as this week, with Federal, State Government representatives and GM.

No tangible results were achieved on Tuesday in talks with John Smith, GM Vice President and German negotiators. According to German negotiators GM is playing for time. GM is opposed to a deal with Magna and Russian partners, a deal favoured by the German government. Detroit favours a deal with the Belgian Finacial firm RHJ International. GM has not excluded the possibility to retain Opel.

Berlin (dpa) - Die Bundesregierung hofft weiter auf einen Verkauf des Autobauers Opel an einen Investor. In den Verhandlungen mit dem US-Konzern General Motors (GM) sei unverändert Bewegung, sagte Vize- Regierungssprecher Klaus Vater am Mittwoch in Berlin.

Noch in dieser Woche soll es neue Gespräche zwischen Bund, Ländern und GM geben.

Am Dienstag hatte ein Treffen mit GM-Vize John Smith keine greifbaren Ergebnisse gebracht. Nach Darstellung aus deutschen Verhandlungskreisen spielt der US-Autobauer auf Zeit. Die Amerikaner lehnen den von der Regierung favorisierten Opel-Bieter Magna mit russischen Partnern ab. Detroit bevorzugt den belgischen Finanzinvestor RHJ International. Nicht ausgeschlossen ist zudem, dass GM Opel behalten will.

I had an Opel wagon when I was posted at NATO HQ in Bruunsen, certainly not a babe machine, but got me to work from Masstricht, not quite the babe machine, but maintenance free for the most part.
