German remembers persecuted gays

German governement has finally paid homage to persecuted gays during Nazis era. The Nazis branded homesexuality an aberration threatening their super race image.
Germany has inaugurated a 600,000 euro concrete memorial to honour the thousands of homosexuals persecuted by the Nazis between 1933 and 1945.
The four-metre high monument, which has a window showing a film of two men kissing, was unveiled in Berlin.
The Nazis branded homosexuality an aberration threatening their perception of Germans as the master race, and 55,000 gay men were deemed criminals.
As many as 15,000 of those were killed in Nazi concentration camps.
Very few who survived ever received compensation from post-war German governments for the persecution they suffered.

It is really sad that it has taken Germany so long to face up to this shamefull persecution. Not one gay survivor remains from that period. And it took Germany ages to rescind the legislation making sex between two men a criminal offence. A bad blot on Germany's history. But they also ought to recognise more clearly the way that the Roma/Gypsies were also treated in the concentration camps, and Roma people are still being treated in an appalling way across Europe.
