Golden Gate Bridge Jump: Girl Rescued

A 16-year-old girl jumped from the Golden Gate Bridge on April 17, and survived. The girl hit the water after dropping 220 feet, and was still conscious when she was rescued by a passing sailboat.

The girl was taken to a nearby hospital and was described to be in critical condition.

A teenage boy survived a jump on March 10; he said that he jumped from the bridge for fun, and that it wasn't a suicide attempt. He survived with only a torn lung, a bruised tailbone, and a criminal charge from the California Highway Patrol.

How Many People Jump from the Golden Gate Bridge per Year?

As the most popular suicide destination in the world, there is roughly one jump every two weeks from the Golden Gate Bridge, and almost all of them prove fatal. It's hard to pin down an exact number, since not all suicides are witnessed.

It was not yet confirmed whether the girl who survived the April 17 jump was trying to commit suicide.

The Bridge, a 2006 suicide documentary, filmed 23 suicide attempts from the Golden Gate Bridge over the course of a year.
