GLAAD holds anti-gay activists accountable for their own words

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, or GLAAD, is an organization that has supported gay rights in our nation for the last 27 years by supporting positive images of gays and lesbians in the media. So, it serves a different niche in the gay civil rights movement in the U.S., versus organizations such as the Human Rights Campaign, which deal with more direct governmental lobbying.

Some of the things GLAAD has done is highlight the fact that religious rightwing Republicans in the Indiana legislature had gotten a speciality license plate in the state of Indiana that benefits Indiana Youth Group, revoked.

I work in a museum and when I see out of state Indiana plates, about half the time they feature the speciality plate that states "In God we Trust" on it. I can't imagine the pro-gay rights speciality plate from Indiana Youth Group is more than a percent or two of all the plates issued in the state of Indiana, if that. But I guess according to the religious rightwing, even that message cannot be tolerated.

Well, GLAAD is working on a new project and it is too highlight all the bigoted statements by anti-gay zealots, who than go on as guests on more mainstream media shows and seem to be more "reasonable" in their anti-gay approach.

See, these people, such as Maggie Gallagher and Scott Lively, issue the most vile anti-gay comments you will ever hear; but they don't want the hosts of these more mainstream shows, and their audiences, to know how much they really despise gay people and homosexuality. Their true beliefs are reserved for their fellow anti-gay brethren. So, here are some of the worst of the worst that they have said outs.

For example, Scott Lively advocated against free speech in Russia:

"Third, criminalize the public advocacy of homosexuality. My philosophy is to leave homosexuals alone if they keep their lifestyle private, and not to force them into therapy if they don't want it. However, homosexuality is destructive to individuals and to society and it should never publicly promoted. The easiest way to discourage gay pride parades and other homosexual advocacy is to make such activity illegal in the interest of public health and morality."

Lively though has not opposed criminal prosecutions of gay men for consensual sex, in Uganda, even though he has whipped up hatred of gays in that nation. So, according to Lively, and maybe you, would be put in jail for writing anything pro-LGBT rights.

Peter LaBarbera compared the gay rights movement to "organized evil".

The best thing for the radical anti-gay movement, is to let them speak in their own words.
