Glenn Beck Calls Obama 'Racist' on Fox News

Fox host Glenn Beck accused President Obama of being "a racist" during an appearance on Fox and Friends.

Beck, who hosts his own popular talk show, appeared on the Fox morning show to discuss President Obama's handling of the arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates.

Beck blasted Obama for criticizing the officer who arrested Gates. Obama quickly backtracked from the comments and invited both Gates and Sgt. James Crowley for a beer. Beck found Obama's attempt at "beer diplomacy" to be too little, too late.

Beck described Obama as "a guy who has a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture. I don't know what it is..."

Fox and Friends host Brian Kilmeade stated that "you can't say he doesn't like white people," since Obama had many white people in his administration.

Beck replied, "I'm not saying he doesn't like white people, I'm saying he has a problem," Beck said. "This guy is, I believe, a racist."

Obama doesn't hate whites. He has a patronizing attitude toward whites and their historical racism, which he sees as the only racism going around.

So, that blind spot about potential racism toward whites by others makes Obama blind to actual racism toward whites, which he merely sees as the attempt to vent grievances.

That is what we used to call "prejudice", not "racism". Today, such an attitude in whites is called "racist". Beck is merely applying the nomenclature of the late Civil Rights movement back on itself, using one of the Saul Alinksy directives of community organizing: Hold your opposition to its own standard.

Roy C...very insightful view on the Glenn Beck comment on Obama...

The problem is Whites "historical racism" that continues to persist to this day...

just less overt and openly arrogant than say circa 1950's and 60's... = )

Blacks simply feel a "You got some nerve" attitude towards Whites who express it when they feel prejudice or racism is aimed at them... im not saying its right but.. remember this is the blood that is on the hands of white america and its past misdeeds... This is the environment that was created by Whites... remember Jim Crow Laws?

My wife and my entire set of in-laws would never let me forget, but my wife's grandfather never hated whites, for example.

My wife and mother-in-law married whites. And they know that racial hatred exists on both parts at times.;

But there is no excuse for demanding an end to racism by whites and continuing to allow yourself as a minority to be prejudiced/racist.

It simple cannot be because it is the epitome of hypocrisy.

ROY:  I don't normally comment on posts that involve white radio talk show host's comments about "people of color". But here goes:  Don't you know by now that the word racism only applies to whites and that any white that accuses a non-white of being racist is therefore a racist simply because he or she made the accusation?  LOL! And don't you know that all the world's misery is on account of whites and that the world would be a much better place if  white people just packed up and left? What's scary is that there are otherwise intelligent people (blacks, whites, et. al).out there that actually believe this spiel   Sorry, but I just had to put in my cracker two sense here . . . .

A retort to Beck's comments is a simple as "It takes one to know one."

We are all racist in one way or the other. Obama knows this all too well and is willing to move on, we should too. Let's all have a few beers, enjoy the day, and let bygones be bygones.

tlreed: We are all racist in one way or the other? How do you know that?  JEEZ! I'm sorry but I have to disagree, flat out, with that assertion. Speak for yourself! BTW: What makes you think that President Obama :knows this all too well? Are you privy to his innermost thoughts?

I was not trying to be outrageous, but "racism" is such an emotionally charged word that I guess it is unavoidable. Neither am I trying to make the term less meaningful. I just think that we are better off accepting our shortcomings. We are only human, no one is perfect, but perhaps I should speak for myself, I am human and I am not perfect.

Obama is half "White" and half "Black", so he has encountered racism from both sides. He is either, both and neither depending upon ones perspective. He has racist thoughts himself, it is unavoidable, it only shows that he is human. It is how he deals with those thoughts that matters, and for the most part he is very good at it. People don't like to be called racist, but get over it and try your best to improve your life and the lives of those around you no matter how you feel about the color of their skin. Sorry, "no matter how I feel about the color of their skin."

I wish that President Obama had not relaxed his stance against Sgt. Crawley's reaction to Prof. Gates.  Too many Americans of every race are suffering from retaliatory arrests in the absence of any crime.  Personal offense at citizens not have a conciliatory tone with law officers is not a punishable offense, therefore people are arrested on charges like "resisting arrest," and "disorderly conduct."  Those charges should be reserved for real incidents and not used when the issue is a citizen did not quake with fear in the presence of police officers and may have responded to officers in a disrespectful tone.  Retaliatory arrests like this sometimes result in wrongful convictions and prison sentences for people who lack powerful friends and resources to help combat the charges offended police officers use to justify their arrests of citizens who simply p**sed them off.  Occasionally, police actually kill citizens who offend them, in the complete absence of any crime.

Retaliatory arrests happen most often to those perceived as least likely to have a means of defending themselves against same.  Therefore, it is true that police aggression is usually directed at minority members in society, especially young black males - "profiling."  However, the 72-year-old great grandmother who was Tasered for talking back to a police officer was white; the Idaho man who police sodomized with a Taser weapon for not willingly admitting them into his home was white; and so was the Phoenix blogger whose home was raided by police and his female roommate handcuffed while they ramsacked the home for three hours because the blogger wrote negative news about them.  Therefore, police aggression and retaliation are not limited to citizens of a particular race, age, or sex.

President Obama condemned such retaliatory arrests strongly, and doing so does not make him racist.  He thinks such arrests are "stupid."  They are stupid, in that police officers are adults who deal with the public every day.  They should have thicker skins, especially since they are armed and have police power over the citizenry.  Also, arrests and trials that follow such incidents are a stupid waste of taxpayer resources.  It costs lots of money to arrest and incarcerate people.  Jails and prisons are too expensive to be used to soothe wounded egos of police officers.

Most of the people who are in the president's immediate family that he grew up loving are white, including his own dear mother.  To assert that he criticized the officer's overreaction because the president is racist is itself racist.  The criticism in effect tells our president that if he stands against overuse of force against any black person, he will be criticized fiercely.  He is to stand by mute while America's long history of police abuse directed at African Americans continues.

I noticed some years ago that when I interviewed with white human resource directors, I had more success in my job search than when I was interviewed by black HR personnel.  This is because the black ones were afraid that hiring me might cast them as racists in the minds of their superiors, and it was "safer" for them to hire someone white.  Such allegations as people are hurling at President Obama sometimes lead to reverse discrimination amongst people within the same racial group.  Those in positions of power refrain from using their ability to help people who look like themselves, seeking to avoid being accused of racial favoritism.  Perhaps making minorities in power defensive about what they say or do to promote the cause of other minorities is intentional on the part people who really are racists.

To learn more about this phenomenon, I recommend a book called "Racism without Racists: Color-Blind Racism and the Persistence of Racial Inequality in the United States," by Eduardo Bonilla-Silva

President Obama is an educated man in his mid-40's who is well-endowed with common sense.  It is ridiculous to think that he believes racism is dead in America or that police don't frequently engage in overuse of force and racial profiling.  Those who criticize President Obama seemingly hope to silence him on this issue and other issues of unequal treatment to black citizens by hurling their false accusations of racism on his part.

Incidentally, Sgt. Crawley apparently fabricated his police report by falsely alleging that the person who called 911 said two "black men with backpacks" may be breaking into a house.  She never mentioned race except to say that one of the men may be Hispanic, and she did not mention backpacks at all.  Now who is prejudice?

In view of this development, I believe even more strongly that President Obama's original stance against Sgt. Crawley's conduct was appropriate.  As far as a black officer speaking in Sgt. Crawley's favor, the "brotherhood" among police officers frequently supercedes racial unity and even their oaths of office to serve and protect.  Ask Sean Bell's relatives, or just read the website below.

Duo , I agree with some of your opinions but I disagree with some.  The President had no business commenting on this without seeing the police report and some of your assumptions about the report are incorrect.  Your personal history is sad but to imply that all Policemen are inappropriate as you clearly imply here is your prejudice.   There are also a majority of black and white who are horrible and miserable for Police to  deal with no matter how well they are trained.  They should be paid very well for what they do.

As long as there are black and white these incidents will happen for everyone; we will be prejudice..just as you are.  What  the real per centages are  we may never know for this incident shows more than anything the overeaction of all.  I commend the officer for keeping his cool when this arrogant , highly educated Professor acted like a Jackass.  Most people know it too but won't talk about it.  The word on the street is Professor Gates is a hot head despite the persona he thinks he has projected.

For Glenn Beck to say that Obama is a racist is CRAZY. He makes a statement that he has hate for white people, last time I checked his mother was WHITE! Glenn Beck needs to watch his words before he opens his mouth

I can't believe how these radio talk show hosts don't realize that President Obama is trying to unite the divided United States of America; that is those 35 years old and younger with the "'old school racist'".  The grandchildren of the this dying racist society really pity those who continue this sad and pitiful attempt to polarize this nation in race baiting.  We true Blue blooded Americans are tired of the trite and worn out tactics of these characters who have co-opted the Republican party, well hyjacked it with this racial overtone.  Why don't you just grow up?  We, as American need to recognize that all our out of country enemies are just waiting for us to go to war with each other over something as stupid as color of skin; it will be a cake walk for another nation to go to war with us, while we bow to the ignorance of race hatred.  I am 61.  I've seen the likes of Bull Conner; George Wallace; David Duke; Barry Goldwater; and so, so many others......and where are they now?  Now we have Sean Hannety; Glenn Beck; Russ Limbaugh; Christian Knights of the_ _ _;.......here we go again.  The Republican party would do America a favor by disclaiming the jargon and create a platform.  I am a Democrat and Black, but at least we care about the health and overall well being of all Ameicans!
