Global Demos Mark Tibet Uprising Anniversary

In Nepal hundreds of Tibetans joined a mass prayer at Samten Ling monastery in Boudha, east of Kathmandu.

Following the service some participants shouted slogans in favour of Tibetan independence, but were quickly confronted by police despite the peaceful nature of their action. Clashes and arrests soon followed.

China’s Xinhua news agency reported the event, but was silent about other rallies around the world.

Shouting slogans like 'Indian Government support us',' Indian people support us',' Free Tibet... Shame on China', around 200 activists also organised a&apospadayatra'(walk) from Raj Ghat to the protest site at Jantar Mantar. The hunger strike, organised by Tibetan Youth Congress which started this morning, will last "50 hours, 50 minutes and 50 seconds". The protestors also asked the United Nations to exert meaningful influence on China on the Tibet issue and release of the Panchen Lama.

Tibetan community was out in numbers in mussoorie to mark the 50th year of the uprising in Tibet in 1959 which resulted in Chinese occupation and exile of His Holiness Dalai Lama to India.

Bhutila Karpoche, a spokeswoman for the march, says it's important to mark this day to show solidarity with Tibetans.

The 25-year-old, who was born in a Nepalese refugee camp, says he hopes the march will help continue putting pressure on governments to help Tibet regain freedom.

After carrying flags and 50 coffins to the Chinese embassy, where they sang the Tibetan national anthem and then held a minute's silence, they headed towards Parliament Square where they renewed calls for a free Tibet.

Waving Tibetan national flags, the marchers shouted “Support Freedom in Tibet” and demanded the Chinese government stop its persecution of Tibetans.

“Beijing has claimed that both Taiwan and Tibet are inseparable parts of China and look what has happened in Tibet. Taiwanese should show more empathy toward the Tibetan situation because we are on the same side,” said Jade Kuo (郭聖潔), secretary of the Taiwan Friends of Tibet (TFT), urging Beijing to open up the Tibetan border to allow access to foreign media.

“The only thing we ask from President Ma Ying-jeou [馬英九] is to allow the Dalai Lama to visit Taiwan because it would mean so much for his followers here,” she said.

Demonstrators carrying a portrait of the Tibetan spiritual leader and wearing T-shirts saying "Tibet _ 50 years of resistance" marched Tuesday to the United Nations. They planned to move on to Times Square, the Chinese Consulate and other locales.

A Chinese Consulate spokesman says officials have taken security precautions but have no other response to the protests.
