"God Hates Fags" clan to picket White House
On Monday, March 30th, between the hours of 11:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m., the "God Hates Fags" Westboro Baptist Church group, founded by Fred Phelps, is planning to picket at the White House because of President Obama's support for LGBT Equality.
On the “God Hates Fags” website, Phelps has this to say about the upcoming protest at the White House:
“White House - Pray for God to SHORTLY destroy Antichrist! 1600 Pennsylvania During his LYING address to Congress on 2/24/09 this raving filthy beast had the NERVE to end with these words "God bless you, and may God continue to bless america." Shocking that he was not immediately cast into hell, but God doeth all things well. This is the face of the antichrist who attempts to call upon the name of the True and Living God and is furtherance of his lies. God is NOT blessing this evil land. Uh, HELLO?! Here is the face of how God is actually, and factually CURSING this rebellious nation: Revelation 6:3 ¶ And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see. 4 And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword. 5 And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand. 6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine. Anyone who has a clue can see the signs of the times, but not you clueless brutes who have your eyes blinded and your ears stopped up. The Lord has dealt with other like rebels, but this time he will fully complete the work he has begun! AMEN!
Driving Equality is hosting a Phelps-A-Thon. The point of the Phelps-A-Thon is two-fold. It is using Phelps' own hateful message to raise funds for a good cause; they will actually be raising money for a local group called Gays and Lesbians Opposing Violence (GLOV), which works to oppose all forms of hate-motivated violence.
Secondly, after the event, Driving Equality will send Phelps a thank you card, telling him how much money he raised for LGBT equality, with the hope that this will upset the group and perhaps inhibit future protesting.

That is quiet the title and well, quite the group as well. I am glad I have not run into them yet.

Gives a new meaning to Freedom of Speech

The best thing is to let them speak. That is the only way people will understand what complete BS they espouse. Silence them and you create a myrtyr.

eastvanray, thank you for reading, commenting, and for the recommendation! I agree that people have the right to speak their minds. I do not agree that groups such as these have the right to espouse hate speech.
Once again, the Westboro Baptist Church protests violate the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Article 20(2).
And, once again, it is justified by civil rights organizations (among others), and under the guise of "doctrine" and/or "religion".

While the US is in theory bound to abide by international agreements it is signatory to, I don't believe that is to be taken as that international agreement superceding the bill of rights for a US citizen on US soil. Phelps is no dummy, he's on solid ground because not only is it his right to free speech, it's also his right to practice his religion because his ideology is mirrored by his (albeit selectively perverted) faith and biblical citations. You may not like it but it's indeed his right.
As for hate speech, can we find any examples of cases where he went somewhere and his picketers got the locals all riled up and joined the WBC morons and they went out and beat up some gays? They're so over the top and almost a parody of themselves I can't see anyone taking them seriously and I think that's where you are at odds with some people here. We all agree they are absurd, you seem to believe they should be muzzled because it "could" lead to someone getting hurt. Only that "someone " doesn't seem to potentially be someone from the group Fred hates, but a person who wants to silence Fred Phelps.
My advice would be to stop taking the guy seriously and laugh in his face.

I think we see eye to eye on all of this, though (maybe I have this wrong) you think they should be silenced because they offend some people OR that they might get people to agree with them and harm gays.
I just think they're so darn stupid nobody's going to join them and it's not as offensive as it is just comically stupid. I have a hard time believing a single person on planet earth hates fags any more because of his work, do you?
It boils down to what we all learned as kids, when someone makes fun of you, laugh it off, laugh with them, whatever you do, just laugh.
If you take it seriously and tell them to stop and go insist the teacher makes them stop...
I think if the world had been laughing in Fred Phelps' face all this time we wouldn't know nor care who Fred Phelps was.

batvette, no I do not "...think they should be silenced because they offend some people...". They should be prevented from espousing hate speech.
No, I do not have a "...hard time believing that a single person on planet earth hates 'fags' any more because of his work,...". It is my opinion that within his own family, he is brainwashing and indoctrinating children. This, in and of itself, should not be ignored.
"It boils down to what we all learned as kids, when someone makes fun of you, laugh it off, laugh with them, whatever you do, just laugh."
I'm glad that you think, "...whatever you do, just laugh." The truth is, anyone who is subject to hate speech and, in particular, on a regular basis, can't "just laugh".
The Phelps' of the world won't go away because someone laughs in their faces. It is probably the case that it would be an excuse to continue exercises in hate.

This guy has tentacles - his reach would appear to be far and wide. I'm not sure that "laughing in his face" will do anything to quell the hatred felt by him and his many followers.
at 08:33 on March 31st, 2009
Yeah, I read that whole report earlier.... but "many followers" doesn't accurately describe the 71 strong WBC, 60 of which are related to Phelps. They are public enemy number one in their own home town, and I don't see that their brand of christianity is catching on.
71 people full of hate. What's been the result? Do you think yelling back in the face of someone yelling at you is a better way of defusing a confrontation? I'm saying instead of doing that people should have laughed, shook their head and walked away.
As in don't feed the trolls. We all know that's the only way it works on the internet, too bad we get too emotionally charged to practice it in real life.
It's probably too late for that now, I'd agree with that. Fred pushed all of your buttons, your reactions gave him the power he needed. He became a cult figure, his family/followers found their raison d'etre, as twisted as it is.

Today, I have been trying to locate information on this protest. I have not been successful. If anyone comes across anything, I would appreciate it if you would add it here. Thanks!

Rhonda, they are beyond disgusting, but I have the feeling that they thrive on this energy of confrontation, this ugliness that they generate.
I wonder if we all ignored them in the media, would they shrivel up and "die" of the sense that no one cared an iota about their opinions?
at 20:23 on March 30th, 2009
Hi Roy! Perhaps, in part, it is true that this group thrives on the energy of confrontation, but I don't think that "...if we all ignored them in the media, [they] would...shrivel up and "die" of the sense that no one cared an iota about their opinions?" Lie dormant perhaps, but not die, and for the reason that the 'root cause' for the continued existence of this group in the United States has not been addressed in-so-far as they are, and have been, protected by alleged 'civil rights organizations' and 'First Amendment rights'.
In my mind, something is wrong with this picture (please refer to my comment responses to Esta for any (or further) clarification of my position. Please also keep in mind that the UK and Canada have had the presence of mind to keep these people out of their respective countries).
at 09:50 on March 31st, 2009
Please also keep in mind that the UK and Canada have had the presence of mind to keep these people out of their respective countries).
That's true but they can do this because they are not their citizens, they have no reason nor duty to put up with them. The US has found reason to exclude from entry people such as Cat Stevens and Bobby Fisher, IIRC, (don't kill me if I got those wrong, it's from memory) and I believe the UK had to put up with a lot of hate speech from that blind Iman.... the UK also excluded Snoop Dogg & Posse. (can't recall if that was for lyrical content, drug possession, being rude to security, or all 3?)
at 20:16 on March 31st, 2009
batvette, "...they have no reason nor duty to put up with them.", and neither does the United States.
at 01:56 on April 5th, 2009
I'm pointing out that another country's choice to not admit citizens of another country is :
Not without precedent by the UK OR the US.
Has little to do with the exercizing of rights by those citizens in their home country.
and the reply you gave was both nonsensical and suggesting what, please?
Would you like them tarred and feathered, drawn and quartered or shot by firing squad for the CRIME OF SPEAKING THEIR MIND?

batvette, thanks again for stopping by and commenting. I understood what you meant:)! And, I am opposed to violence in any form, including Hate Speech.

This guy has tentacles - his reach would appear to be far and wide. He has "followers" in every city in which I've lived and even those I've visited.W
While I'm not implying that Phelps and/or his "followers" have anything to do the criminal acts mentioned in the following "Citizens Against Hate article", his name is mentioned in the groups "links." Readers may find the story informative.
