Bringing to mind allegations of un-American activity that occurred during the days of Senator Joseph McCarthy's hunt for Communists, on Thursday, April 9, 2009, Representative Spencer Bachus (R-Ala.) told local leaders in Birmingham, Alabama that he had a secret list of 17 socialists that serve with him in the U.S. Congress.

In a related story, only 53% of American adults believe capitalism is better than socialism.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 20% disagree and say socialism is better. Twenty-seven percent (27%) are not sure which is better.

Adults under 30 are essentially evenly divided: 37% prefer capitalism, 33% socialism, and 30% are undecided. Thirty-somethings are a bit more supportive of the free-enterprise approach with 49% for capitalism and 26% for socialism. Adults over 40 strongly favor capitalism, and just 13% of those older Americans believe socialism is better.

Investors by a 5-to-1 margin choose capitalism. As for those who do not invest, 40% say capitalism is better while 25% prefer socialism.

There is a partisan gap as well. Republicans - by an 11-to-1 margin - favor capitalism. Democrats are much more closely divided: Just 39% say capitalism is better while 30% prefer socialism. As for those not affiliated with either major political party, 48% say capitalism is best, and 21% opt for socialism.

There aren't any contributor controlled options available for use by individual posters to prevent linking sources.

There may be a glitch of some sort. Have you contacted the paid staff?

Hi Karen.... I didn't think there were but I'm fairly new here so I just assumed it was the reason because normally, I've noticed that links trigger a spam security code window before the comment box accepts the inclusion of a link, in order to eliminate spamming.  In this case, the security code box never materialized, with a message saying I was spamming, so I just deleted the link and I was allowed to post.

I will try contacting staff since it is obviously a problem with the site.... thanks

It's a bit much as these folks continue their relentless search for something "bad" about their own peers.  It appears that they've too much free time at the expense of their local taxpayers who sent them to Washington D.C. to work on behalf local needs.

Why don't these legislators do some real works for their constituents, or for that matter, do anything productive for the United States of America??

Thanks for the recommend, Pythiian1.

This may be an attempt to send out feelers for some type of investigation since Republican Michele Bachmann of Minnesota has already made statements during the 2008 presidential campaign that she thinks Americans might like to know, as she sees it, that there are those who are un-American, as she alleged then Candidate Obama to be.

Those engaged in all of these activities believe they are being productive as they cement, in the minds of people that are most fearful during these trying times, that American life is under full scale attack, with all manner of boogeyman scenarios just around the corner.
