A new report on the growing global food crisis will call for people in developed countries to stop throwing away edible leftovers.

FAMILIES can help ease world food shortages by being less wasteful, a Government report will claim today.

As Gordon Brown arrives at the G8 summit of world leaders in Japan, the study will give a stark message on the growing global food crisis.

It will say farm production has to rise dramatically to meet demand.

Staples such as bread, meat, milk and eggs are forecast to increase sharply in price.

But amid the growing global shortages, the average British household is estimated to be throwing away s420 worth of food which could have been eaten every year.

Before flying to Japan, the Prime Minister said: "If we are to get food prices down, we must also do more to deal with unnecessary demand, such as by all of us doing more to cut our food waste."
