Governor Bobby Jindal Fabricated Katrina Story in His Speech
Chosen to deliver the Republican Party's prime time response to President Obama's speech to both houses of Congress on February 24, 2009, Louisana Governor Bobby Jindal related his story of being in the office of Sheriff Harry Lee as he took a phone call, with the governor placing himself in the thick of things, as events unfolded to coordinate the rescue of stranded Hurricane Katrina storm victims.
It seems it didn't happen that way.
From Jindal Admits Katrina Story was False:
.... Jindal's presence in Lee's office during the crisis itself was a key element of the story's intended appeal, putting him at the center of the action during the maelstrom. Just as important, Jindal implied that his support for the sheriff helped ensure the rescue went ahead. But it turns out Jindal wasn't there at the key moment, and played no role in making the rescue happen.

Good one, Karen. Actually I was never under the impression that he was in any harm because frist thing I remember reading about him was that his family and he were in a safe place. I was naturally curious since I had been occasionally following Jindal's story earlier since he has East-Indian roots like myself. Looks like this is one flap that's going to escalate.

Thanks for the news, Karen, of more deception. Liar, liar, pants on fire! Caught! Wonder if it matters that he was.

Thanks for this Karen. Great work.

the lies of the last eight-years from the repubs continue on, time for them to shut up and cooperate in rebuilding the country they mostly destroyed......

That makes him same as Obama. He promised tax cuts for middle class. But what I am seeing is he is eliminating mortgage deductions and increase taxes on energy companies and that gets passed to me.
I am dissapointed in all of them. We need a real revolution!

The latest report is showing that your contention is a bit premature. I have no interest in the man or his State but I have been getting reports over the wire services on line that isn't complementing your accusation. Let us wait and see.

This is an outright lie. See my NP story for the facts.

It seems the devil is in the details of the telling of this story.
From an article in The Times-Picayune in Louisiana:
Lee was recounting the boat rescue story to the caller on the line, Teepell said. The phone call was not taking place while the boats were attempting the rescue operation, but some days afterward, Teepell said.
The above reference to Teepell is Governor Jindal's Chief of Staff, Timmy Teepell, who states the event to which the Governor refers did not happen while the boats were attempting to rescue victims of Hurrican Katrina.
Governor Jindal's remarks after President Obama's speech gave listeners the impression that he was there, at Sheriff Lee's office, in the midst of the rescue operations, possibly poorly chosen words to recount the tale.
Whatever the reason for Governor Jindal's remarks, he was not in place in the way his remarks seemed to indicate during the rescue efforts.

Good piece, Karen. I'd go with the The Times-Picayune's rebuttal to Governor Jindal's remark. He could have chosen to use any other examples that he was personally involved with as a legislator at the time, so why used some fabricated story.

Thank you, Pythiian1.
Telling the story the way it was told allows for the castigation of 'government involvement' re: bureaucracy, much decried by Republicans, as if bureaucrats were preventing rescuers from rescuing stranded citizens, treading water, as well meaning folks were hassled about nonsensical bureaucratic red tape.

You're welcome, Karen. The baffling point is that Governor Jindal was a Rhodes Scholar and for him to be so thoroughly submissive to the GOP's dogma without realizing that eventually, people will call him out on this fabrication, does not speak well of him and his party.

A Reminder of what Bobby Jindal is Made Of.

From CBS News Political Hotsheet :
Following the questions, Jindal’s office responded to Politico's Ben Smith. A spokeswoman told him that the conversation, as Smith puts it, “actually took place some days later in Lee's office -- though still in Katrina's chaotic aftermath -- as Lee was ‘recounting’ his frustrations with the bureaucracy to someone else on the telephone.”

From Salon.com :
In its own investigation of the story, Salon has found that, while it is true bureaucrats were delaying the rescue effort, the explanation Jindal gave -- that they wanted to see proof of insurance and registration -- might not be true.
Lee hinted as much in a September 2005 interview with CNN's Larry King. "Those boats where not allowed to get into the water when they were needed," Lee said, "and I just found out about seven days later one of the reason boats couldn't get in was they didn't have enough life preservers and some of them didn't have proof of insurance." Lee himself died in 2007, and his widow could not be reached for comment.
But Salon did speak with one man who was part of that rescue effort, Jerry Riggs. Riggs says that, having lived through the frustration of being held up for two and a half hours before he could go save people trapped by the storm, he agrees with the gist of Jindal's story, that the government caused a delay, to the great frustration of the people involved. "You have to understand the situation -- we were all really anxious to get out there and start saving lives," Riggs says. His account of the reason for the delay differs from Jindal's in one crucial way, however. Riggs says the authorities weren't asking about red tape things like insurance or boat registrations. They were checking identification -- possibly, he thinks, in case some of the rescuers never made it back alive.

well, i was there and i remember the story on the news and on 105.3. exactly what he said is what happened. it was all over our local news. keith olberman couldn't even tell the names of our parishes. he probably didn't even know we had parishes. bobby jindal is a stand up guy you all just don't like him because he is against obama's government take over. cnn, headline news, pmsnbc, fnc, they don't show or never even know about half the stuff that went on in these small parishes. for the small amount of time i was not in louisiana after katrina and i had to depend on national news to find out what was going on, all these news stations and no answers. they spoke and showed nothing of importance. the only way i could find out anything was calling a friend who was with the sheriffs office in st. bernard. but for the most part you couldn't even get through on the phone. that story he told about the red tape holding up rescue is very true and ask anyone form here, and unless they are deaf, dumb, and blind, and completely unaware of what is going on around them they will tell you the same. you want to talk about lies. how about obama saying there are no earmarks, or pork in this stimulus plan to only have one of his own bust him with this comment" well there is, well i guess you would call it, yeah pork but the american people don't care about that. whats a couple hundred million dollars people don't care about that." bald faced lies. like we are children and we can't comprehend a lie. it is amazing how a party name can blind a person.

I am sure it is true that government bureaucracy can slow any process down, having been a victim on several occasions myself.
My interest in this story was aroused when two of the Governor's spokespersons felt the need to address the issue to clarify.
The indication, from an interview in 2005 at CNN with the now deceased sheriff, seems to be that he, the sheriff, did not find out about the bureacratic tie ups until a week after the rescue efforts so, faulty memories aside, it seems, the Governor may have been mistaken in characterizing himself as being in the sheriff's office WHILE the sheriff fussed with someone on the phone about red tape, which in his delivery the night after the President's speech, seemed to indicate the incident, the phone call, occurred as unfortunate flood victims waited to be rescued, stand up guy or not.
