Governor pleased by reported student MetroCard deal
CITY HALL- 585,000 STUDENTS learned a lesson in challenging the government, a lesson they wouldn't have learned without their free MetroCards.
According to sources in the governors office and in the state legislature, a deal has been reached which would require the state to contribute $25 million to the MetroCard program--a stark contrast to what the MTA proposed.
A source in the governor's office said "the tentative deal is a big victory" for the Governor who initially proposed the idea.
Under the MTA's budget gap closing proposal they'd charge students half fare starting this school year and full fare the next.
The city will fork over more cash than the State, contributing $45 million dollars however the MTA will fill in any funding gaps when necessary.
