Governor Rod Blagojevich Claims He’s Innocent
“I’m hear to tell you right off the bat that I am not guilty of any criminal wrongdoing and that I intend to stay on the job and that I will fight this thing every step of the way,” said Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D-Ill.) proclaimed his innocence in the opening volley of a statement delivered at the John R. Thompson Center in downtown Chicago this afternoon.
“I will fight, I will fight, I will fight, until I take my last breath,” he continued. “I have done nothing wrong.”
Blagojevich then paused to take what appeared to be a deep and difficult breath before continuing his statement.
“…and I’m not going ot quit a job the people hired me to do because of false accusations and a political lynch mob.”
After explaining that he was “dying to answer these charges” in the appropriate forum, in a court of law, and was “absolutely certain” that he would be vindicated.
Blagojevich then quoted the first section of Rudyard Kipling’s poem, If:
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise;
After imploring citizens of his state to reserve judgment until his case had played out in court, he thanked his supporters for their thoughts, prayers and good wishes. Unfortunately for him, listing those supporters individually by name might have taken less time.
The video of his statement is available here.
