Govt asked to move ICJ for Dr Aafia
THE Judicial Activism Panel, in an emergency meeting on Friday, chalked out strategy to deal with the situation after the government’s failure for recovery of Dr Aafia Siddiqui from the custody of the US government.
According to a press statement, the JAP claimed that it had demanded the government file a case against the US government for Dr Aafia’s recovery in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in 2008. The statement further said the panel had also offered free legal services in for Dr Aafia.
The meeting also passed a resolution, suggesting that the government should choose Pakistani lawyers to defend Dr Aafia’s case in the US as the step could help reduce cost of the case as the government had spent a considerable amount on payment to the US lawyers. The resolution urged the US to release her at least on parole before Eidul Fitr so that she could celebrate the Eid with her family.
