NP Rank:
GPS Enabled Shock Bracelets for Airline Travellers?
Just when you thought you'd heard it all and believed the stream of paranoid ideas coming from the Department of Homeland Security had reached the summit of possible craziness, get ready for this! Imagine, if you will, a time in the not too distant future, when all airline passengers flying in US airspace would be required to wear a Taser like bracelet before being allowed to board an aircraft. This device, which could not be removed by the passenger, could be activated by Air Marshals or other crew on the aircraft immediately shocking the wearer into submission, and the GPS would allow realtime tracking of every individual on the aircraft. To nutty to be real? Watch the promotional video accompanying this story and read on...
A senior government official with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has expressed great interest in a so-called safety bracelet that would serve as a stun device, similar to that of a police Taser®. According to this promotional video found at the Lamperd Less Lethal, Inc. website, the bracelet would be worn by all airline passengers (video also shown below).
This bracelet would:
• Take the place of an airline boarding pass
• Contain personal information about the traveler
• Be able to monitor the whereabouts of each passenger and his/her luggage
• Shock the wearer on command, completely immobilizing him/her for several minutes
The Electronic ID Bracelet, as it’s referred to, would be worn by every traveler “until they disembark the flight at their destination.” Yes, you read that correctly. Every airline passenger would be tracked by a government-funded GPS, containing personal, private and confidential information, and would shock the customer worse than an electronic dog collar if the passenger got out of line.
Clearly the Electronic ID Bracelet is a euphemism for the EMD Safety Bracelet, or at least it has a nefarious hidden ability (thus the term ID Bracelet is ambiguous at best). EMD stands for Electro-Musclar Disruption. Again, according to the promotional video, the bracelet can completely immobilize the wearer for several minutes.
So is the government really that interested in this bracelet?
Apparently so.

moonwolf, I like this story. It's good stuff. Very interesting. I am not too sure where I stand on this issue. From the surface it seems like a smart idea, but I think if you go into it and think about some of the possible problems, it might be difficult for them to implement this.

Thanks Jeff,
Seems just a tad Orwellian to me! The banal classroom-like explanation on the video sounds a lot like the old "Stop, Drop, and Roll" films from the fifties telling us what to do when an atomic bomb detonated in our city. Do you really trust your politicians, bureaucrats, and law enforcement to not misuse such power to control people? I certainly don't!

I agree, I think if this system is implemented, it will definitely be abused. I think we are slowing moving into an age of where people are being treated as a number. Reminds me of a movie called "The island." Soon enough this bracelet concept is going to be used in everyday life where people will constantly be monitored and tracked. They will say its for our "safety" but we are slowly losing our privacy.

That was a great distopian movie.

moonwolf, I like this story. It's good stuff. I am ok with monitoring incoming telephone calls from possible terrorists, but Moonwolf you and I have found agreement, Yeah! Bravo, send in the band! This is too freaky for me. If America continues on this slope, Canada may have another conservative in BC.

@Moonwolf: I like this story a lot. Is the Department of Homeland Security (a term which has a definitive Naziist by-ring in the ears of a German citizen by the way) also interested in setting up privately managed concentration camps, maybe and is GPS sidetracking going to become a criminal offence?
Gee, how I wish back the good, old, free days of Soviet Style stalinism, should these Allmachtsfantien (allmight fantasies) ever be implemented?
If I just think where my GPS has already positioned me under unlucky circumstances, you will get a Taserorgy, not to speak of sadist cabin crews. ;)
Ghuareib the US entirely!

Truly astounding! ...and much of this is due to new technologies being marketed in a "free enterprise" system -with profits being the main motive.

This tech is not likely to be implemented anytime soon... and if I am wrong, it will be a short while till an entire terminal falls to its knees because a hacker with a backpack has made a point.
He will make a deceleration of the act in a post 15 milliseconds before the act and post the code/schematics 15 milliseconds after the act... this will be automagic... this will be zero-day for full effect.

moonwolf, I like this story. It's good stuff. That promo film was like something I'd expect to see in a "1984" film. Thinkers had predicted such control of the population years ago in SF novels. Have these control freaks thought about what happens if "the terrorist" gets control of the "activator"? The terrorists have done their job if the population gives up their free will out of fear.

moonwolf, I like this story. It's good stuff. Often those who think of these ideas are hoping that if it actual becomes part of the system they will get rich and can afford to fly on NetJet. Won't see any bracelets there. Just when i was getting used to Business Class...

This should be expanded to encompass all people where ever they are, not just at airports. That way we could stop crime in its tracks and everyone would be safe from all threats.

Tee Hee! Except the threat of the guys with the game controllers!

I mean, what could possibly go wrong?
(Seriously, though, no mixed-company-appropriate word exists for this level of stupid-security)

Absolutely incredulously correct jordan! Thanks!
It's all part of a new TV show "Little House on the Runway."
