Of course the Lieberals want to distance themselves from this farcical Twit of an MP who has been given her comeuppance by the Public outraged that Little Miss Ethnic Votes R Us has been found out trying to spend Canadians money on those who would be recent old age arrivals only need to wait a piddly 3 years instead of 10 years in Canada and never have to work in Canada a day in their life to collect what many Canadians work a lifetime to collect. That is our Old Age Pension, a sacred cow not to be trifled with by seniors, granted it may only be 7000 dollars or so a year, but why should someone who is a recent arrival and close to old age be eligible to reap the benefits without having to pay a god damn dime into it? Ruby Tuesday, Dhalla Wally Dingo thinks it is perfectly fine to slaughter this sacred cow with both barrels!! So how about Ruby offer her pension for life to the tune of 100K a year to her constituents to pay for their aged parents who are allowed to come to Canada! Hello Ruby, you hear me? I didn't think so!
Course Ruby is not alone in all this, there were a slew of ethnic vote grubbing liberals who were all part of the scam to get more ethnic votes, but it seems, they all backed away leaving Ruby stranded to wallow in her own political fecal mess. Liberal Leader Ignatieff and his Toronto Handlers I am sure wanted this Ruby reading to just go away, considering his Liberal pre election stance against the Ruling Conservative Government as he issues them a throw down Challenge that Canada is in an Economic Mess, and only the Liberals would be as fiscally responsible would not bode well if this Reading by Ruby and her Wonk Backpeddlers came in sneaking in the backdoor.
So don't trust a lieberal is the catchword, cause just because this Ruby Tuesday reading of the bill is shelved for now, mark my words backdoor banditry by the Lieberals to come up with something just as outrageous is not too far in the offing, especially when it comes to grabbing as many ethnic votes and ludicrous promises to immigrants to this country, regardless how much Canada's jobless and economy suffers.
After all it is just politics and our money!
Cause when it comes to Politicians looking for votes with someone else's money, taxpayer money is no object !
OTTAWA — The Liberal party’s seniors and pensions critic says she will not support a contentious bill introduced by one of her fellow caucus colleagues that would improve access to Old Age Security pension benefits for seniors.
The legislation, tabled by Liberal MP Ruby Dhalla, was designed to allow elderly immigrants to qualify for the pension benefits after being in the country for three years, instead of the current requirement of 10. But Judy Sgro, the seniors and pensions critic, said the Liberal party wants to come up with a more comprehensive approach to addressing pension issues.
“The leader (Michael Ignatieff) and the Liberal caucus feel the solutions to the challenges facing our national pension and retirement systems must be addressed holistically and with a comprehensive national vision,” Sgro said in a statement released late on Monday afternoon. “Expenditure of public dollars must never be made without careful consideration of the long-term ramifications on the public treasury.”

Good Op/Ed Barry. I think it's also above 7000 a year,since it would automatically qualify them for the OAS income supplement to top up their piddly pensions.

" Thanks Karl this change by the liberals would allow someone to move to Canada at age 62 and, in three years, be eligible for OAS as well as all the free medical. They will also not be required to pay income tax at all during this time as these immigrants will be kept very well thank you very friggin much!

A three year wait is crazy. A ten year wait is too little. If immigrants come to Canada after age 50 they should not qualify for what others have paid taxes on for a lifetime. Immigrants coming to this country after age 50 are often reuniting family and their families should take care of them. Those of us who have worked and saved for our old age are subject to a clawback of the old age pension if our retirement income is too high. Taxes heaped upon taxes for the support of freeloaders!

Yep there is an automatic clawback on our military pensions at age 65 to accommodate OAS.

Thanks Barry and your your piece is right, it's unconcinable that Ruby Dhalla wants to rob me,.......but my looking at it?.......it's going to be a done deal........the Feds have completely cocked up the immigration system there is now no way to close Pandoras box........

This Op/Ed is more "Ethnic MP bashing" rather than an intelligent rebuttal of a bill set forth by an ELECTED member of parliament. It is also laced with subtle racism. The sentence including "slaughter this sacred cow with both barrels," is a perfect manifestation of this writer's racist banter. Excuse me, Mr. Artiste but perhaps you should have looked into the background of the person you were bashing before making religious assumptions. Ruby Dhalla is not even a Hindu. Everyone is fine with the government lending money to banks to force them to lend to people so that business don't succumb to the same mass-scale pattern of bankrupcy evident in the United States. This is fine even when it is fast becoming an international fact, that this recession has taken place as a result of people's inability to save. BUT it bothers people if 40 bucks a month are placed into that hands of immigrants who will also be spending this money, on food, transportation, etc. and helping keep Canadian grocery stores, buses and sky train stations running. All of a sudden rational thought disappears overnight. "Those old immigrants" that Canadians are having a problem with are taken care of by their families. The small increase in income would probably be passed on to the families who take care of them. Canadians would not understand this concept because as soon as their parents start to show obvious signs of old age, they are shipped off to senior homes and visited a handful of times a year. These seniors lose contact with the younger generations and are often painfully lonely. How do I know this? Because I work in one of these so-called "care homes". If people took care of their parents and grandparents, billions of our tax dollars wouldn't need to be allocated towards senior residential care. If Canadian society gave back some of the years that their parents spent raising them, not only would we save billions of dollars, we would not be complaining about giving some old Indian man/woman fourty dollars a month to make their stay in Canada more comfortable. Obviously we really aren't as rational and tolerant of a society as we might think ourselves to me.
