Growing 'tent cities' blamed on foreclosure crisis
Nevada, Reno "Tent city" no work, nowhere to go
People who had lost their jobs to the ailing economy, or newcomers who had moved to Reno for work and discovered no one was hiring.
Within weeks, more than 150 people were living in tents big and small, barely a foot apart in a patch of dirt slated to be a parking lot for a campus of shelters Reno is building for its homeless population. Like many other cities, Reno has found itself with a "tent city" -- an encampment of people who had nowhere else to go.
From Seattle to Athens, Georgia, homeless advocacy groups and city agencies are reporting the most visible rise in homeless encampments in a generation.
Nearly 61 percent of local and state homeless coalitions say they've experienced a rise in homelessness since the foreclosure crisis began in 2007

If you open your can of beans cutting about 3/4 the way around the lid, you can bend the metal around a stick and heat the can over the hobo fire.

Thanks Fairbanks for Flag "Reno tent city" you tell us how to heat the bean can...

SOLARLIFE, I like this story. It's good stuff. Favelas are spreading around the world. I have seen a lot of them in Paris, Amsterda, Rome, and London aslo. Back in Brazil on my teen years I never imagined to see that in the first world. Now even US has been "favelizado".

Luiz Castro, thanks for Flag "Favelas, tent cities" spreading around the world London? Rome, Reno, Canada, Japan. The result of the global economy is: some have the money hided offshore Cyaman islands-Dubai. The stupid rest of middle class goes Favelas, topped by the drug users in the Canada case. Viewpoint solarlife Brazil. In Brazil I saw not so many people forced to live on the street like in France. At least in Brazil they can make a living somewhere making a little house without permission. The poor situation, many women 50y, now living on the street in France. The "Bail system" for homes, you need a working contract salary 3 times the rent; elder people don't have it.

New Orleans just managed this summer to clear out the tent cities under the freeways. Now Galveston and the coast cities wiped out by Hurricane Ike will soon produce more homeless. Foreclosed by Ike. Wonder what will happen with all their mortgages on homes that no longer exist. Foreclosed by banks? No assets there.

Rene, thanks for Flag "Tent cities", your comment "New Orleans just clears the tent citis under the freeways, what will happen to foreclosed by Ike?

Things are getting tough all over.
I happened to catch the movie "Cinderella Man" last night which in some strange way I found inspiring in these tough times.

That is really intereasting. The homeless problem is getting a lot worse everywhere, even in the small island(Kauai) that I live on. I recently read an article about that on my employment news blog
