The Largest Ball of Plastic Wrap

Today is Guinness World Records Day for 2009, when people from all over the world compete to be in the next edition of the Guinness Book of World Records.

Today new records were set for dragging a bus with your hair, longest group hug with a stranger, and traveling across the Egyptian western desert the fastest. 

This is the fifth Guinness World Records Day:

"It's a wonderful feeling knowing that so many hundreds of thousands of people around the world are taking part in fun, inspirational, courageous and awe-inspiring record attempts," said editor-in-chief Craig Glenday.

List of new Guinness World Records:

Manjit Singh: Dragging an 8.5 tonne bus 21.2 metres by his hair.

112 Strangers: Hugged for one minute at London's St. Pancras Station.

Largest ball of plastic wrap.

Alistair Galpin: Spitting a champagne cork five metres, blowing a Malteser 11.295 metres with a straw, and blowing a coin 37.6 centimetres.

Tao Yongming: Drove his motorcycle up a sand dune in six minutes, two seconds.

Toufic Daher: Made the world's tallest matchstick model of six metres, 53 centimetres.

Nabil Karam: largest collection of model cars with over 22,222.

Hesham Nessim: Traveled across the Egyptian western desert in 13 hours and 33 minutes.

76 different nationalities in Helsinki squeezed in to a sauna, that is the most ever in a sauna.

The fastest 40 metres human wheelbarrow race record set at 17 seconds in Helsinki.

Largest gingerbread man, of 651 kilogrammes, baked in Oslo.

Jim Lyngvild: peeled and ate three lemons in 28.5 seconds.

Largest pizza base stretch in one minute in Milan was 42 centimetres.

Ernesto Cesario: Ate a bowl of pasts in 90 seconds.

Joe Alexander: Broke a stack of 11 concrete blocks with his elbow while holding a raw egg.

Maiko Kiesewetter: Climed five metres up a wall using darts.

23 people in Fort Worth, Texas, broke the record for lassoing simutaneously.

297 people in Memphis set the record for the largest cheerleading dance.

Largest cup of hot chocolate of four gallons in New York.

1,817 lipstick prints collected in 12 hours in New York set a new record as well.

Shaun Jones: Fastest hot water bottle burst at 18,81 seconds.

Largest number of people dressed as storybook characters in one place in the UK.

A human flag involving 14,800 people at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The world's narrowest house in Millport, Scotland. 

Fastest time to recite the first verse of a song in 7.91 seconds

Guiness World Records not successful:

The largest bikini parade in Australia failed as 228 people were not enough. See a video of the bikini attempt.

The world's longest Chinese dragon.

Still in progress is the longest reading aloud marathon by a team, being attempted by the International Solidarity for Human Rights.
