Hurricane Gustav made landfall on the Dominican Republic and Haiti. In Haiti, it has killed at least two people, but weakened to a tropical storm. Gustav''s winds fell to 95km/h (60mph), although experts warned the storm could regain force later this week. Oil prices on trading markets rose amid forecasts that by Sunday Gustav could again be a hurricane and threaten oil installations in the Gulf of Mexico. The Dominican Republic discontinued its hurricane warning but a hurricane watch remains in place for Jamaica and Cuba. In Cuba, ex-President Fidel Castro issued an essay mentioning the hurricane and pledging that the government in Havana "guarantees no-one will be forgotten". At 0800 local time (1200 GMT) on Wednesday the storm''s centre was about 150km (90 miles) west of the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, and about 195km (120 miles) south-east of Guantanamo province in Cuba, the US National Hurricane Center said. The storm lingered for hours over Haiti''s poor, deforested southern peninsula on Tuesday, felling trees and raising water levels on banana, bean and vegetable fields. Hundreds of people in coastal Les Cayes ignored official warnings to seek shelter, instead throwing stones in protest at the high cost of living. UN peacekeepers and Haitian police fired tear gas to disperse the crowds. Flood victim Marlene Anglade told Reuters news agency: "The water took away our bed, our house ware equipment, and we never received any help at all." Correspondents say Haiti remains volatile because of soaring food prices, which in April led to deadly protests and the toppling of the nation''s Prime Minister. Haiti was hit a week ago by a tropical storm that left more than two dozen dead. Gustav is the seventh tropical storm of the Atlantic hurricane season.
We want to thank you for your support and prayers for this ministry. We watched as Hurricane Gustav tore across the southern part of Haiti. Ti-Goave, where one of the schools is located, lay in the path of the storm. A lot of damage was done to the surrounding area. Houses were destroyed, crops were lost and livestock was scattered. We learned today that some of the families who lost their homes are staying at the school until they can find suitable housing.

Thanks, Hanna is giving them lots of rain, more problematic then winds as the trees have been havested in the mountain. Now the mudslide are killing folks. Can't blame them. They are the poorest country in the western hemisphere. So they do what they can to survive for the day, not thinking about what the futire holds. When I was there, the mountains have many bare spots. Americans have really put a lot of effort in to the country...but it still isn't enough.

Yes Sir, Haiti now has 11 deaths from Hanna. It is a real problem. The photos came from my friend in Haiti who is a missionary. I am still trying to get the status of the two children I sponcer. Thankfull the mission put up most of the families in the school they built which is concrete and steel enforced.
