A powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake has struck Haiti yesterday, ten miles of the capital of Port-au-Prince, followed by at least twenty aftershocks. The quake caused major destruction and life loss throughout the affected area. The death toll still remains unknown, but is estimated to be in the thousands. Doctors Without Borders estimates around three million people could be affected. Much of Port-au-Prince is believed to be destroyed, with the majority of buildings sustaining structural damage. It is being reported that nearly all hospitals in Port-au-Prince area have either collapsed or been abandoned. Some are describing the situation on the ground in Haiti as "worse than a war zone."

Here is the most up-to-date list of the compounds destroyed or damaged:

  • National Palace
  • UN Peacekeeping Headquarters
  • Tax Office
  • Martissant health centre
  • Solidarite maternity hospital
  • Doctors Without Borders Trinité trauma center hospital
  • Taiwan embassy
  • Central cathedral
  • World Bank offices in Petionville
  • Hotel Montana
  • Castel Haiti
  • College Canado
  • Caribbean Market
  • Main prison (with reports of escaped inmates)
  • Damage to the airport reported
  • Schools and homes around Port-au-Prince
  • Road to Canape Vert, a suburb of Port-au-Prince
"It basically looks like someone dropped a bomb. It is reminiscent of the aftermath of 911 with the dust everywhere."
