It has now been a week since the devastating quake has struck Haiti, but the number of people dead is still uncertain. There are earthquake death statistics put forward by various aid organizations and Haitian government, but the estimates are not in agreement.

The latest estimate offered by the European Union citing Haitian authorities stands at 200,000 people dead.

The death toll in the last Tuesday’s earthquake is now feared to reach to 200,000 and around 1.5 million people were rendered homeless by the earthquake.
Total death toll in Haiti: Roughly 200,000, estimates the European Union, quoting Haitian officials.

This number is comparable in scale to the 2004 Asian tsunami casualty count, which was estimated at 230,000 people dead.

But, many earthquake victims in Haiti are still dying due to the lack of medical attention, food and basic sanitary conditions. There are now reports of erupting violence and an imminent public health disaster, which might make the death toll climb even further.

There are other death statistics estimates going around, however. Here is a list of them:

As of January 13, Haiti Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive estimated the number of people killed to be well over 100,000.

Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive said “well over” 100,000 people may have died in yesterday’s earthquake, as the United Nations and relief groups rushed aid to the Western Hemisphere’s poorest country.

On January 14, the Red Cross estimated 45,000 - 50,000 people dead.

On January 15, the Pan American Health Organization estimated 50,000 - 100,000 dead.

Interesting in your google.com link reports it is reported that some 600 plus Canadians are missing.  CBC this morning reporte 849 and 12 dead.

There seems to be a lot of speculation on the number of deaths.

I guess we can say without reservation that there are way too many and that even when the numbers are tallied it may fall short of the actual numbers.

Very true acp, many bodies will never be recovered, and consequently many families will be left in limbo about the fate of their loved ones.

in the end the exact number may never been known with many just being placed in mass graves without any kind of record, but what else could they do?

I know it's sad for the Haiti locals and loved ones lost in the quake, but I guess I'm a bit different in thinking the death toll is a horrible thing. Again, sad for the locals and loved ones lost, but on a grand scale of world population, 200,000 dead does not scratch the surface. With the world's population at 6.8 BILLION people, loosing 200,000 doesn't seem like a big deal at all. If this event happened every single day for a full complete year, that only comes to 73 million people.... again, hardly scratching the surface. It's sad, yes. And locally, i'm sure it's tragic. But in a world's view it isn't worth more than an hour on the news. Just my opinion. You may commence flaming me now.

Sorry redmeat, but you really have to be cold to say that. I am 15 and evenI think that is a ridiculous thing to say. Imagine if your mother was lost in the disaster... I mean it probably wouldn't mean s*** to you because she's just one in nearly 7 billion, right? It's really untactful to say such thing with somone on the same comments post as you, looking for loved ones... Mate, it's awful. You're selfish...

Just for you information and formation: The population of  Haiti is 10 million people. I do not know where u get this number but it is very inaccurate. I think your thinking is very evil. How would you feel if you lost your mother or your father among 10 or 15 people. Would you be sad? I think before you put your idea there, you have to be considerate to those who are mourning for their love ones. You decrease the value of who you are as a human being. I am asking myself are you a person or ...... s. ?

Redmeat, Please allow me to take your invitation and begin "flaming" you.  Perhaps I should go back to your hometown and slaughter two hundred thousand people, and then you can tell me that it isn't significant in the grand scheme of things.  In fact, if you were to know ONE person close to you who died, you would be stricken with grief, and would be furious with anyone who suggested to you that the death was not significant (and rightly so).  Do not spread your hypocrisy and indifference to the pleas of the broken on this forum.  With Love, Aidan

Redmeat, it won't make a scratch on the human population when someone kills you for being so -insert your own adjective-, will it? Maybe someone will do the world a favor. ...Volunteers?

Redmeat, let me say that if your world view is that of an atheist or humanist.... I at least commend you for sharing a viewpoint that is very consistent with your beliefs.... Your statement makes perfect sense if you believe that the world's origin is evolution.... why should 200,000 people in a underdeveloped 3rd world country be such a tragedy?  Darwin and Nietschke would argue 'survival of the fittest and would even go so far as to say.... evil is necessary.... it eliminates the weak.... Those of you flaming Redmeat yet sharing the same atheistic worldview are the ones who need to slow down long enough to think things through.... If life has no purpose.... who cares about anything but our own personal needs... But if there is a God, then obviously the compassion we feel and remorse and prayers and aid that we offer makes perfect sense in that we were born in His image.... But you can't keep hopping in and out of a worldview and still have the right to condemn others. Now on the other hand.... if redmeat plays along both lines, he is irrelevant... Camus held a similiar belief and he said the only thing left to debate is 'why not suicide?'

"I guess you all can go read your bibles..." WOW can you say DISCRIMINATORY?!?! Being humanitarian has nothing to do with religion last time I checked. This comment really shows how these responses come from an immiture, uneducated, and completely ignorant perspective. Just because you can do some basic math doesnt mean your responses are ligitmate in any respect. You truly have a lack of compassion, understanding and sense of self worth. I feel sorry for you, and how much negativity covers your heart.

I was in Indonesia when the Aceh quake happened. Things have improved since then, so there is hope for Haiti, although nothing will ever bring the dead back of course.

Well I can guarantee one thing...Im pretty sure the God of the Bible isn't too happy with people defending his word with profanities and hatred. I myself know Jesus, that's a pivotal point of being a Christian...Jesus even says (Matthew 7:22-23) 22Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' 23Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!' But concerning redmeats comments, I can't be too terribly mad at him, it's like being mad a blind man for stepping on my feet. If someone doesn't know that God created each of our souls and they have value to him, and that we didn't evolve from pond scum, then why would they care about the suffering of humanity. The cool thing is though....Jesus cares. He willingly layed down his life, died on the cross, was RESURECTED from the dead, and now....my friends...is alive in heaven interceding for us. He loves everyone, but to those who turn to him realizing how utterly hopeless it is to be good by the law or doing good works, Jesus can forgive them and fill them with his Holy Spirit, which enables us to do the work of the Lord. Jesus fufilled the law because humans no matter how hard we try....all fall short of the glory of God! But it does sadden me to hear of individuals who would not care at the great loss that a nation has incurred. My heart breaks for anyone whose experienced such sorrow and for those who don't know Jesus themselves. How terrible that day will be without his forgivness....:(

Agnosticandproud, On many points I agree with you.  Yes, we Christians have been very poor stewards of the gifts entrusted to us, and yes, in many instances, we have abused the teachings and commands of our Lord.  That does not mean in any way shape or form that the religion itself is not valid.  And if you would like to talk about atheism, what about the 60 million slaughtered under the atheist Communist regime in Russia?  What about the many thousands of devoutly religious people tortured in atheist places such as Czechloslovokia?  I do not say that Christians have always acted well.  But do not blame the many for the offenses of the few.  I do not think that all atheists or agnostics follow the behavior of Lenin or Stalin, so I ask that you will extend the same courtesy to people of faith. Furthermore, the people in this country who are the worst off seem like princes to the people of Haiti.  Yes, we can and must help them, but we must also love all people.  ALL people.  The Bible is a book of allegory?  Why, then, do the Gospels give such precise accounts as to when the events occured.  Whether or not you beileve in the events, it is a tenuous position to say that the Scriptures were merely intended to be allegorical.  In conclusion, please do not bash the religion because certain groups misrepresented it.  I hope and pray that God reveals Himself to you and to all the people of Haiti, and comforts them in this time of tragedy. Love, Aidan

Stupid f***ing Christians. Stick to F***ING LOGIC. NO ONE can be resurrected in the sense that your f***ing "savior". HE WAS JUST ANOTHER HUMAN BEING. PEOPLE EXAGGERATE...now imagine about 2,000 YEARS OF EXAGGERATION. WHAT, WAS HE A F***ING GHOST? MUSCLEMAN? UNTILL YOU CAN PROVE TO ME THAT THERE WAS ACTUALLY AN ENORMOUS F***ING BOULDER BLOCKING His resting place, GO F*** YOURSELF AND YOUR LITTLE STORIES. P.S. Take into account I know it is possible he was crucified. Also, chances are the bible stories you all highly worship were made up my many people/generations of monks (or something of the sort)...same thing with the idea of god (not necarrily Christian god or whatever, god(s) in all religions) An omniscient Being, I guess, is the best way to describe it. Oh yeah, another thing that pisses me off is that all of you have some of the most atrocious grammar I have ever seen.
