Demonstrators gathered yesterday at St Martin in the Fields in Central London to call for justice and return of Lovinsky Pierre-Antoine, Haitian human rights activist and President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Lovinsky fought for justice for the victims of the 1991 and 2004 military coups against elected President Aristide. Haiti has been under UN control since 2004 and UN forces have been accused of rapes and murders in the country. The demonstrations are the result of international pressure and there have been calls for justice both in the UK and the US. In the UK an Early Day Motion in the Parliament commended weekly vigils in Port-au-Prince, London, Los Angeles and San Francisco, to keep the issue in the public eye.
The movement counts witht he support of US Congresswoman Barbara Lee, who has introduced a Bill calling for the investigation of the Bush administration's role in the 2004 coup. It also counts with the support of US Congresswoman Maxine Waters (who issued a resolution to cancel Haiti's debts), actors Danny Glover, Vanessa Redgrave, Secretary of Pax ChristiInternational Claudette Werleigh and Amnesty International.
