Once again after some of the "fog of war" clears the truth finds a way out of the forest. I am not so sure that many care once the onslaught of news passes as truth. Most of us are on to the next event. I heard that the UN spokesperson said he was 99.9% sure but left a door open for the possibility that in fact it was used by Hamas. I am not surprised at the possibility. Also, the IDF is in fact under orders not to shoot if they know civilians are there. Remember this was a school that according to reports no one was supposed to be in school at the time. The UN never informed the IDF that in fact it was being used as a safe haven regardless if Hamas was firing from there.

But anyway it was reported today in the Jerusalem Post and other papers that

"Two residents of the area near UN school that was shelled by the IDF on Tuesday said that they had seen a small group of terrorists firing mortar rounds from a street close to the school. The two spoke with The Associated Press by telephone on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal."

The school grounds were being used by terrorists to fire mortar shells at troops stationed nearby, and the soldiers responded by firing mortars back, the army said. According to the IDF, the dead included members of the Hamas rocket cell, including senior operatives Imad Abu Askhar and Hassan Abu Askhar.

Defense officials told The Associated Press that booby-trapped bombs in the school had triggered secondary explosions that killed additional Palestinians there.

Tikun,

I'm unclear how you can insist on this as being the truth. Also its already covered on NP by gahooch:

Witness in UN Gaza School Comfirms Hamas Firing From Within

where gahooch points to an article in New York Times which claims to have a witness.

Solarlife has just posted an alterate view, and the UN continues to demand an full and independant enquiry.

I was not referring to this particular story but to the general interest in the truth. Sorry for the confusion.

The New York Times as well as Jpost are reporting that Hamas was in the building, however CNN and two more sources report that this was not the case. CBC did not report either way. Only that an investigation has been called.

The UN "witness" is not credible.  The terror group Hamas already admitted long time ago its tactics was to use human shields.  They interprest Islam that go straight to heaven to kill anyone who is non muslim.

I get nervous reading some of this posts here because many in this group are supporting terrorist and liberal causes too.  If these terror people took over all the gays would be killed and no speech freedoms

Luis, Israel contends according to the government spokesperson that they did not know that all of these peope were in the school hiding at the time and would not have fired at the place where  rockets were coming if they had been updated by unwra.

The official UN statement is not out yet, other that they asked for an investigation. And the Israeli Army statement is that they acted in self defence to save their lives since they where fired up on from the School, wish was supposed to be empty.

I think it's great that we have two stories with two contrasting viewpoints today (other one is here); it really allows us to question sources and look at the way mainstream media reports on situations in countries where there is not a lot of first-hand information on controversial events, such as this one.

I just want to remind everyone to please remember our code of conduct and that if any comments get too personal, I will edit them for content as it detracts from the conversation about sources, wording and witnesses, which could be really interesting.

I was accused by monitor here http://my.nowpublic.com/world/terrorist-hamas-admits-it-uses-human-shields of personal attack for saying it was my thoughts that it is "hard" for Muslims to be objective about Israeli situation.

Since when is truth  a personal attacks?

I think in that case it was a misunderstanding that just needed to be explained a little more. The first phrasing of your comment could have been seen as offensive; but once it was cleared up, it was fine.

so who do you believe? The side whose holy book tells them to lie? or the side whose holy book commands them to tell no lies?

How many rockets need to be fired into Israel until the world understands?
if any Amercian or European city gets 6000 rockets fired at their schools, hospitals and  homes,
there would not be any question,
Self defense is the answer.
what country in the world would expect to live under these conditions?
Enough is enough !

Why Ambulances Sometimes Get Targeted By The IAF?
http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=116_1231063776

Since September 2000 the security forces are witnessing the cynical use by terror organizations
of the Palestinian medical resources in general and of ambulances in particular,
assuming they are 'immune' to security checks at checkpoints.

The use by the terrorist organizations of medical resources,
particularly ambulances, in order to bypass the searches and
security checks in IDF checkpoints emphasizes the need for a security check of medical vehicles.
Such searches are conducted in order to ensure that ambulances are not used by terrorists in an attempt to transport terrorists,
weaponry and explosive devices.

Hamas is in a religious war with the Jews.
The organization has repeatedly stated it will never accept a Jewish state
in the region and believes in a one state solution.
Israel is interested in a diplomatic agreement to end the conflict
with the Palestinians that will create a Palestinian state living in peace beside it.

Hamas believes in death. As one Hamas member told a journalist,
“The difference between us and them is
that they wait passionately for the day they can return home safely,
while we bid farewell to our families and hope to die as martyrs.
” Indeed, Israelis believe in life.

Hamas stands behind civilians, using them as shields. Israeli forces stand in front of civilians to protect them.

Hamas leaders flee at the first sign of danger, abandoning their people to suffer the consequences of their actions. Israeli leaders are the first into battle to defend their citizens.

Hamas hopes that innocent Palestinians will die so the world will blame Israel for the bloodshed. Israelis do everything possible to ensure no innocent Palestinians will die – going so far as to warn their enemies before attacks, thereby losing the element of surprise – so they will not blame themselves for taking innocent lives.

Hamas will use any cease-fire to regroup and prepare for continuing their pursuit of Israel’s destruction. Israel wants a cease-fire that will bring permanent peace for the Palestinian and Israeli people.

Hamas will deliberately target Israeli civilians with rockets and suicide attacks to kill as many innocents as possible and try to instill terror in the entire population. Israel will target the terrorists and seek to avoid harming the innocent.

Hamas sends its children to schools and summer camps that glorify martyrdom and encourage them to become suicide bombers who will diminish the human race. Israel sends its children to school to become doctors, lawyers, and scientists to enhance the lives of all people.

Hamas has created a theocracy in Gaza whose clerics preach intolerance toward non-Muslims and call for holy war against Jews and Christians. Israel is a democracy whose leaders rigorously enforce freedom of religion and seek peaceful relations with all its neighbors.

Hamas will ruthlessly murder any opponent, killing fellow Palestinians as readily as Israelis. Israelis will sign peace agreements with enemies who are prepared to recognize their right to exist and coexist beside them, as they did with the leaders of Egypt and Jordan.

Hamas is unconcerned by international opinion about its atrocities and confident the world will pressure Israel to stop its operation before its mission is complete. Israel knows the world is indifferent to the murder of its citizens, but cannot ignore the sentiments of its allies.

Hamas says it will never make peace. Israelis say they want nothing more than peace.
