“AARP CEO Responds to Obama's Deficit Reduction Proposal

"Social Security did not cause the deficit and should not be cut."

by: Tina Johnson-Marcel | from: AARP | July 7, 2011

AARP CEO Barry Rand released a statement today in response to a report in the Washington Post that the White House was open to making cuts in programs such as Social Security and Medicare to reach an agreement with Republicans before the August 2 deadline to raise the nation's debt ceiling.

See also: "Social Security and Medicare benefits should not be on the table for deficit reduction."

“AARP will not accept any cuts to Social Security as part of a deal to pay the nation’s bills,” said Rand. “Social Security did not cause the deficit, and it should not be cut to reduce a deficit it did not cause. As the President and Congress work to negotiate a deal to raise the debt ceiling, AARP urges all lawmakers to reject any proposals that would cut the benefits seniors have earned through a lifetime of hard work.

“AARP is strongly opposed to any deficit reduction proposal that makes harmful cuts to vital Social Security and Medicare benefits. Social Security is currently the principal source of income for nearly two-thirds of older American households receiving benefits, and roughly one third of those households depend on Social Security benefits for nearly all (90 percent or more) of their income. The deficit debate is not the time or the place to talk about Social Security. AARP will fight any cuts that are proposed to this important program, including proposals to reduce the cost of living adjustment for beneficiaries (COLA) — such as the proposed chained CPI — which AARP also believes should not be considered as part of the debt ceiling or deficit reduction negotiations."

In a budget proposal offered in April, President Obama vowed opposition to any cuts in Social Security or Medicare.

So the report that the White House might be considering changes to the popular programs caused shock waves in Washington. A few hours after the Washington Post story, the White House appeared to be clarifying the president's position, with a White House official who is close to the negotiations telling the Huffington Post that the Washington Post story "overshoots the runway." The official continued: "The President said in the State of the Union that he wanted a bipartisan process to strengthen Social Security in a balanced way that preserves the promise of the program and doesn't slash benefits."

The statement from AARP CEO Barry Rand echoes previous statements from the nonprofit, nonpartisan organization.

As Rand concluded: “Throughout the deficit reduction and debt ceiling debate, AARP will continue its efforts to raise the voices of our members who depend on Social Security and Medicare for their health and economic security.”

Didnt Obama just a hour ago threaten that seniors, VETS and the disabled might not get their checks in August? I guess today Obama's threatening to take society's most vulnerable money if he doesn't get what he wants is the republicans fault! What a spin on reality. But what do you expect from liberals who yell they love the 1st amendment but then pass legislation limiting what words that are wrote on cig packs. Or how the liberals say they love babies one day and then attend a pro-abortion rally the next. Or how the liberals say they love animals but then want ALL pets neutered and spayed. Now they want you to believe they love Seniors, VETS and the disabled while they threaten to take their only incomes. Sorry if I dont buy anything the far-left sales.

I find Obama's frightening Seniors as despicable as Republicans frontal assault on seniors, vets, and poor people of all kinds. Republicans want their cake and my bread too.

What are you suckers smoking?   There is NO difference between Obama and Bush.   Obama is continuing Bush policies. The wars continue; the Bush tax cuts continue; the Gitmo detainees are detained; the "covert 'justice' sytstem" continues to slow-kill people who have caught on to the lies.            Elections are a farce, a  puppet show for the masses.  The real government can be found behind the scenes; it continuously creates   wars in the Mideast to ensure Big Oil's access to oil, to ensure Big Finance's access to bailouts, and to ensure Big Weapons Manufacturers' ability to keep providing the Pentagon with weapons to replace the used ones.   Wake up Americans. The Evil Shadow Government will not decrease the defense budget.    Every social program will be cut to ensure the money continues to flow to the corporate predators who have hijacked the US Government.

Social Security would be just fine if the government would just keep their hands out of it!  The problem is the Congress keeps "borrowing" money from the funds (over $2 Trillion since 1993).  This is the same as people who take "loans" from their retirement plans, it takes years to pay back and after all that time you just get back to where you were when you took the loan.  If they'd leave it alone, it'd truly be a nationwide retirement plan for everyone who works most of their life.

I waited until my day of need with trust and concern. Now, I am here with no trust and revolutionary spirit.

one thing they Really need to do in Washington is make it illegal for anyone in power (presidents, lawmakers, etc) to 'dip into' the SS coffers.. this has been happening (probly b4) since i was a kid.. and they talk about 'not enuf $' in the program to keep it going in what? 30 years? if they make it illegal to use SS as their convenient 'slush fund', perhaps it might have revenue to operate thru boomer retirement.. my oldest brother is a boomer and he retired early. just imagine when the main part of the boomers retire, the system will go broke (and they'll blame it on us). if they had kept their hands out of the damn cookie jar since day one, maybe they wouldn't be having problems with SS. 8| if gov't had some integrity about only using monies for what they were originally intended, we'd have less problems today .. this is just a Christian rumor, but i heard long ago that when you buy postage stamps, that money actually goes to military endeavors.. ^^ i don't know but it sounds possible considering what they do with SS money. Obama: stop using SS money for other things, stop threatening us for your problems, and stop blaming the American ppl for gov't mistakes! plz!
