At the Hanover Tomato Festival today, four people were hospitalized with severe oil burns after a vat of boiling oil, at temperatures around 450 F and 232 C, fell on them.

At about 12:30pm, a worker at the Funnel Cake booth accidentially tripped on a hot fryer filled with cooking oil, spilling the contents.

The names and ages of the victims have not been released yet, but two of them were transported via medi vac with second degree burns and will have to have surgery. Two were taken by ambulance to the nearest hospital with burns over 30% to 50% of their bodies.

The festival celebrates the Hanover Tomato, and attendance is around 40,000 for each year. There are many events, including a tomato judging competition.

Over 40,000 event goers experienced this celebration in 2008! The Hanover Tomato Festival is all geared up for an even BIGGER event in 2009!

Oh my gosh.  I sure hope there is a good burn unit there.  We are thankful in the south to have Doctors Hospital in Augusta which has one of the best burn units in the world.  Doctors is where DJ AM and Travis Barker were treated there following the plane crash we had here in Columbia, SC.

Burn victims have a difficult time recovering.  I wish them well and blessing.  Thanks for the story
