Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has named 18 senators to Canada's Senate.  Harper, who believes that members of the upper chamber of Parliament should be elected rather than appointed made his decision to add 18 unelected senators as a way to ensure that his government's measures get passed through parliament more easily.

The Conservative government has complained that its agenda has often been stymied because of obstacles in the Liberal-dominated Senate.

Among those appointed are journalists Mike Duffy and Pamela Wallin and former Canadian Olympian Nancy Greene Raine.

Senators are paid $134,000 per year and can serve until the age of 75.

The Senate appointments by province and territory:

Newfoundland and Labrador: Fabian Manning

Nova Scotia: Fred Dickson, Stephen Greene and Michael L. MacDonald

P.E.I.: Michael Duffy

New Brunswick: Percy Mockler and John D. Wallace

Quebec: Patrick Brazeau, Suzanne Fortin-Duplessis, Leo Housakos and Michel Rivard

Ontario: Nicole Eaton and Irving Gerstein

Saskatchewan: Pamela Wallin

British Columbia: Nancy Greene Raine, Yonah Martin and Richard Neufeld

Yukon: Hector Daniel Lang

Don't know much about Canadian politics, but this seems to me important information.

Important in the sense that the PM and his party have stated for years that they oppose an unelected Senate and then he goes and adds 18 senators, so that they can help push his agenda through Parliament.

Another dictator who needs to go. I hope the Liberals straighten out their act and oust this fool.
