Harry and Paul by BBC: "flesh shaking" and "not even funny"
There is a controversy raised for the Paul and Harry show of the BBC network. It was a certain episode that showed a Filipina maid ordered to wave her butt to a "northerner".
The script goes as follows:
"OUR CHUMS ON THE ROAD WANNA SEE IF WE COULD MATE THEIR FILIPINA MAID WITH OUR NORTHERNER..."
"COME ON CLIVE MOUNT HER (REFERING TO THE FILIPINA MAID)!"
"YOU! YOU!(REFERING TO THE FILIPINA) PRESENT YOUR REAR !"
Some said it was not "really a funny show"...
“What’s so funny about that show?" asked Aurora Javate De Dios, executive director of the Women and Gender Institute and a migration studies professor at the Miriam College .
“Don’t the writers have any creativity left to induce humor without insulting someone?" she added.
A lot of congressmen and women had their own reactions against the show, even labeling it as "racism".
UK ambassador to the Philippines pointed out that BBC was independent of the UK government.
"Like the Philippines, the UK respects freedom of expression and the free exchange of ideas. The BBC has editorial independence, and views expressed/portrayed by the BBC are completely independent from those of the UK government," the ambassador said in an official statement released by the embassy.
Well there was also someone who said they must just be "over reacting " (it being labeled as racist). But after seeing the episode herself she had to say a totally different comment.
Jean Enriquez, executive director of the Coalition Against the Trafficking in Women, was horrified when she saw the infamous episode that showed a Filipino domestic helper “entertaining" her aging British employer.
At first, Enriquez thought some groups who cried foul over the said racial slur were overreacting. Her opinion changed however when she saw the clip herself.
“Nanginginig yung laman ko sa galit (My body was shaking in anger)," she told GMANews.TV in an interview. “I wasn’t laughing at all. Who would find that funny?"
I've provided the link of the episode below. I wanna hear what you guys think.

Personally I find it offensive for Filipina maids. Yes we have our right to expression but let us care for what others may feel.

It is really offensive. I for one would label it as "racist"! I don't like it and it's not funny!

It's NOT FUNNY, not only to Filipinas, but also to women in general. The writers of this show should definitely apologize.

I think most of the people who were offended simply missed the target of the joke. Filipino and British humour are very different so this is unsurprising.
The sketch was actually mocking how certain types of English people see themselves as superior to all those outside their social class. The sketch is an exaggeration to show viewers the ignorance of that Englishman's way of thinking.
A popular theme of British humour centres around making fun at themselves. In this case, we are supposed to be laughing at the middle-class English guy who reveals his own stupidity by the way he treats others.
I've explained this in a little more detail in my own post about the Filipino community's petition against the Harry and Paul show

Gender and racial slur - wow that's a double whammy. I've yet to watch the video, though. Which I'm kind of hesitant to do because I might get riled up, and I get riled up often enough with the local offerings in our own shows and movies. A lot of local films and shows and commercials and songs are reprehensible for an even greater number of reasons - gender perception, the way dark people are comically portrayed, values, unforgivably sh*tty writing, and the fact that Willie Revillame still walks this planet instead of getting comfortable in that special place they made just for him in hell. But hey. That's just me. Double-citizen Anthony might have a point, though. Brits...too satire-lovin' for their own good! :)
