The lava has reportedly flowed through a neighbourhood into the ocean.
The lava flow from Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes, had already moved across an emergency viewing road on the big island of Hawaii.

Officials hope to have the viewing road reopened by this weekend.

Crews were also widening a highway in anticipation of extra tourists trying to get an up-close look at the lava.

I think this is an important story and would benefit from other NowPublic contributors working on it. I've flagged it as News Wanted and invite others in relevant locations to look for more evidence.

ryan nadel, I like this story. It's good (hot) stuff. I've seen the aftermath of a vein of the volcano going down a mountainside. Imagine lush vegetation cut by a wide swath of black (hardened lava). In this case, imagine a river of fire and glowing rock.

Hello Ryan,

Great story!  Living here in Oregon, I'm very close to the Cascades, which is a string of volcanoes along the state, including Mt. St. Helens.  The closest one to us is Mt. Hood, but there is also Mt. Rainier and more.

David says he still remembers the feet of ash that covered all the cars, buildings and land here for weeks when Mt. St. Helens erupted in the 80s.

Mt. St. Helens is still active and Mt. Hood too (I think) so if either decide to blow their tops again, I'll be there with my camera and phone in hand to immediately call Now Public!

We were visiting Hilo from California and a local friend drove us down here for a once in a lifetime close-up -- It was like being in a National Geographic documentary. We were able to see the lava from only a few feet away, the heat was intense!
