A Lawyers worst nightmare may be coming true, they are being discarded by those they relied on for golf memberships,  Timmy's braces, and  that  new BMW.   To some Lawyers who specialise in making money off the misery of others when it comes to  Family Law, must feel the hairs on the backs of their neck standing up in what can only be a Nightmare scenario in "The End of the World", as "Hell is finally freezing over!"   With internet Wills and Real Estate and other legal "how to documents " available, will Lawyers really be needed at  all, reserved  only for  criminal cases?

Oh the Humanity!

Canadian lawyers have become 'luxury goods', magazine warnsJanice Tibbetts, Canwest News ServicePublished: Monday, July 07, 2008

OTTAWA - Lawyers have to come to grips with the prospect that they are a "luxury good" that may no longer be needed in the country's courtrooms as more litigants represent themselves, warns a leading Canadian legal publication.

The National, the magazine of the Canadian Bar Association, makes the bold assertion in an editorial, entitled Life After Lawyers, published in the current edition.

The editorial focuses mainly on the growing number of people who are showing up in family courts to fight over their children and marriage breakdowns without hiring lawyers.

Crowd Powered jurisprudence! I think I can hear the rustle of Do-It-Yourself legal reality shows being pitched in cable network boardrooms in LA... come to think of it The People's Court may just have been the first reality TV show... so far ahead of it's time apparently.

I think in a world of conflict that we live in, lawyers will always have a part.

Bringing a knife to a gunfight.

Sure the knife can do the job, just like researching your own legal issues... but if the other guy brings a gun (lawyer)... you are more than likely dead.

However, I would concur that there is the beginning of a trend towards DIY legal.

Thanks everyone for your comments, and great comments they are.  Internet has helped so many, starting with WebMD and now Lawyers online, cheaper, faster, and as they say Steve "We can rebuild him (Court Case)"!!  Just a matter of time, criminal cases will always need lawyers, and corporate law, but for the bread and butter cases cut and dried, some are finding online forms and a cheap cursory glance by a notary just as good as a lawyer,  Notaries need not be lawyers, so DIY may be the way to go.  A lot of lawyers billable time is sending law clerks to do their leg work for them, so I guess Law clerks who offer online services know how to make a buck off their bosses.  Could be the wave of the future, but then Lawyers can also look to Politics if they find themselves suddenly unemployed.

good stuff:

Barry Artiste, I like this story. It's good stuff.

Great news!  I hope I have to fight one of these self-lawyering people in court some day.  I will be the one with the highly skilled $500/hr attorney and the judgement in hand when it is all over.

Really I think Judges are obsolete when they are nothing but hand picked tape recordings of  corrupt politicians. Think like a judge and never be a lawyer is the motto.

Barry,

Do you notice that everyone loves to hate lawyers....until they need one.  Then their lawyer is thier best friend.

Barry Artiste

A Lawyer much like a hooker, both proclaim to be your bestest pal if you have money, otherwise you are left on your own.

eastvanray

Actually Barry my best friend IS a lawyer.  And for me he works pro bono.

Barry Artiste

You said Bono!!

good stuff:

Hahaha, good stuff Barry Artiste. I have mixed feelings about lawyers. On the one hand, the jokes about lawyers have a sound basis in reality, I know some petty and litigious lawyers. On the other, my sister is a lawyer, and at the same time one of the most caring individuals you could ever meet.

I believe that families will be better served without lawyers fighting over assets and children. Let them make their own arguments and have the court decide. I'm not sure this will spell the end of lawyers, just a reduction. Corporate litigators will always have their place.

Barry Artiste

Thanks James "Truer words ever spoken" I have a three uncles who are lawyers back east, one a Senator, I Love em, only cause their family. But they know who I feel about lawyers.
