Hey McCain, where is Spain?
In an interview with Radio Caracol Miami, presidential candidate John McCain referred to his policy on U.S. relations with the "Latin American region" when asked what he would do to strengthen diplomatic ties with Spain.
In the interview, McCain is repeatedly asked by Radio Caracol reporter Yoli Cuello if his presidency would include a White House meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero. In response, McCain goes into a lengthy discussion about his take on U.S. allies in Latin America, specifically Mexican President Felipe Calderon (see video on sidebar; 2:50 minutes into interview).
Cuello asks McCain over and over again about Zapatero, and whether or not he, as President, would invite the popular Spanish Prime Minister to the White House. McCain never gives her a direct response.
McCain's Latin America reference has caused an uproar among political observers, who say it suggests that the Republican presidential candidate doesn't know where Spain is located. But is that the case? Did McCain betray a depressing ignorance about global geography, or was he simply dodging a question? Cuello thinks it is the latter.
I just got off the phone with the Miami reporter who interviewed John McCain and elicited the Spain-goof answer that we've been writing about on the front page of TPM -- an interview in which McCain appeared to grow confused about who his interviewer was talking about.
She tells me she doesn't believe that McCain didn't know who Prime Minister Zapatero is or where Spain was. Instead, she believes that McCain was deliberately ducking the question of whether he'd meet with the Spanish Prime Minister.
"I didn't get the impression that he didn't know who Zapatero was or where Spain was," the reporter, Yoli Cuello, told me. "Honestly, what I thought was that he didn't want to answer the question with a yes or no answer."
Was McCain dodging the hot-button political question of strengthening political ties with Spain by inviting Zapatero to the White House? Or did he simply demonstrate that he didn't pay much attention in Geography class? American voters, take your chances.

McCain on Spain sounds mainly plain...
How sad, though I guess it could just be a brain hiccup.

When you listen to the interview (video in story) it is actually a little scary, he seems genuinely confused. Poor McCain!

Ha ha, too true! I also vaguely remember somebody in the 80's not knowing that Canada was to the North. I was little then, but politics is a family hobby so I heard about it.

Tina Kells, I like this story. It's good stuff. In an earlier interview McCain stated Putin as the president of Germany.
Some information to add conflict US / Spain: The sapanish King entering th US had to strip in front of a stupid immigration officer naked. "The officer not knowing their are still kings in europe continued his supect search. Like all other europeans, the spanish king disgusted by perverted US immigration checks, backfired quickly.
From September 1st 2008, all US citizens need a approved visa to enter Spain. ....just to the background conflict spain

I live in France, a European country.
From here, we have the feeling that the american government is making war everywhere because he doesn’t know anything about the people of the world outside its borders.
How can you have such power and be so ignorant?…
I believe it’s not really ignorance but also a way of preserving a “way of live” regardless of all the disasters it may provoque (human or ecological)…
But we hope very deeply that something will happen after these elections…

Hispanics everywhere should be very concerned that McCain has no clue about foreign policies or matters. I dont think he was trying to avoid the question; I think he is clueless about countries outside of the USA. Hispanics and Latins should be open their eyes and ears and realize this man does not know you, your culture or wants to learn about you or your culture; since he cant tell the difference between Spain & Mexico! So much for education in this country.

Tina Kells, I like this story. It's good stuff. Folks from Spain are Latin... but last time I checked Spain was across the pond.

Tina Kells, I like this story. It's good stuff...and curious!
I think Yoli Cuello it's wrong...maybe, meanwhile the rest of students were learning some geography, he was watching The Muppet Show at home...
