Armed men believed to be related to drug traffic gangs forced drivers to leave their vehicles, which were used  as barricades to block the main highways around the area of Monterrey in an attempt to stop anti-drug security forces.

Hours later there was a shootout at Monterrey Technical Institute where soldiers went onto the campus chasing a group of armed criminals and killing 2 students in the crossfire.

Five presumed drug gang members and one soldier were killed in shootouts Thursday and Friday after criminals blocked thoroughfares in two northern Mexico states to prevent military reinforcements from arriving, authorities said.

The war is on.

As usual, the first instinct of the Mexican government is to label victims of shootouts as gang members. In this case, 2 victims were graduate engineering students. The army is not the answer. This is not a war. This is a serious societal problem and the simple solution is decriminalizing all drugs. Unfortunately, the US will continue to fund arms, not common sense.

Yes, two of the victims turned out to be students at Tec. de Monterrey. One of them is from a little town close to where I live.
