Hijab whereforth dost thou commeth?

To me hijab is actually a state of mind. If a woman has to be modest, she can be modest without wearing hijab. All my female relatives are extremely modest and none of them wear the hijab. If the hijab is to announce the wearer is a Muslim, then firstly why is it only applicable for women, secondly it is my firm belief that in this day and age of ethnic discord and ethnic segregation, the hijab serves to accentuate difference and alienation rather than signify modesty or Muslimness. This does not mean that I want all of us to look alike, but I certainly don’t want the Muslims of Sri Lanka to feel they belong more in Saudi than in Sri Lanka by adopting a new form of dress when we had a perfectly good cultural dress before.

Reactions, anyone?

A thought provoking piece on the hijab and Islam. Read the full article here

The author has regularly written, from a largely feminist perspective, on aspects of Islam. In this article she explores interpretations and practices of wearing the hijab in the muslim community in Sri Lanka, and the manner in which wearing it (or not) is interpreted and seen in this community. It is an article that has generated a number of interesting responses to date from fellow Muslims.

sorry sanjanna, you should have to know more about the concept of hijab,, in Islam hijab is obligatory for muslim women to preserve their dignity,so they should not be mistreated by opposite gender .

the more precious a thing is,the more it is concealed from others, have u ever seen pearls and diamonds scattered on the roads, if any one carry them, carry in coverings, hiding from all around.

A muslim women is not a decoration pieace that every one enjoys seeing her beuty, but her beuty  is solely for the one who choses to be her life partner.i.e her husband.

*“O Prophet! Tell thy wives and daughters, and the believing women that they should cast their outer garments over their persons (when abroad); that is most convenient, that they should be known (as such) and not molested. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

[Al-Quran 33:59

salaam sister sanjanah

Hijab is obligitory for woman after she begins puberty, Allah will not see her modest without it.

You should not see the observance of your religion as par with being accecptable to the wider western world as the discourse will get so much worse before the last day and will the western world save or protect you as you are trying to protect them on the day of judgement. they will not sister the only protection will be with Allah.

Just to tell you i am an English woman who has recently reverted to Islam, i am 26 and have been studing the religion for about 2 years now and i proudly wear my Hijab, when i wear i feel so peaceful sister and i feel closer to Allah all glory be to him.

The passage the above sister or brother quoted are the words of almighty Allah how can you question them sister

I have no doubt that you and youe female relatives are very modest muslimah but dear sister Hijab is a must in sight of Allah and something precious for us Muslim sisters it is a symbol of our faith and submission to Allah.

Hijab is beautiful sister

May Allah guide you in this matter.

Allahu Akbar!
