Hilary Clinton and Foreign Policy
Hilary Clinton has not received much recognition for her foreign policy instead she has made waves for her pant suits, scarfs, weight and her husband. Unfortunately the mostly sexist and sensationalistic commentary can over shadow the important initiatives the Secretary of State is under taking.
Coming back from an 11 day tour of Africa, Clinton highlighted the radical area of the Congo in an opinion piece for People. Clinton denounced the atrocities occurring in Congo, specifically the sexual violence towards Congolese women and children. 1,100 rapes are reported each month, with the unofficial number much higher.
Women and girls in particular have been victimized on an unimaginable scale, as sexual and gender-based violence has become a tactic of war and has reached epidemic proportions. Some 1,100 rapes are reported each month, with an average of 36 women and girls raped every day.
Mrs. Clinton established precedent in American foreign policy, by making her first trip to Asia. Traveling to Japan, South Korea, Indonesia and China represented a visible shift in a post-cold war world. Addressing the emerging economies as equals and brushing aside the fears of both radical left and right politicians has begun a marked change in relations with the world.
"special emphasis on encouraging major and emerging global powers -- China, India, Russia and Brazil, as well as Turkey, Indonesia and South Africa -- to be full partners in tackling the global agenda."
Secretary Clinton has played devils advocate, but has showed strategic diplomacy compromising on certain areas such as China's human rights violations in order to forge new cooperation.
New clues from Washington have hinted that foreign aid reform will be on the agenda. Secretary Clinton has sanctioned the first-ever Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review, which will map out future diplomatic and development endeavors. In the 2010 budget she has secured generous funding for the United Stated Agency for International Development (USAID) and is a leading proponent for the Obama administrations new world hunger action.
These subjects are what we should be talking about not what Bill Clinton thinks. Her responce was right: Bill is not the Secretary of State and she is certainly not channeling anyone.
