Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State: Is Bill Clinton a liability?
It is standard procedure that the activities and associations of any candidate for the post of Secretary of State be put under a microscope, but in the vetting of Hillary Clinton is it her activities that matter or the activities of her husband Bill Clinton?
Since leaving his presidential post under the dark cloud of the Lewinsky scandal Bill Clinton has made great strides to reinvent himself as an honorable man. Bill and Hillary Clinton have toiled to put the sex scandal behind them, both professionally and personally, and have emerged as important players in American and global politics.
Hillary Clinton is currently the favorite for the appointment of Secretary of State in Barack Obama's cabinet. Undergoing the vetting process to secure this appointment is proving to be every bit as difficult as overcoming the Lewinsky scandal and once again it is Bill's behavior that is coming under scrutiny.
Bill Clinton has built a post-presidential career in public speaking and has made a good living in the process. Last year Clinton spoke at 54 different events and earned $10.1 million dollars. In some cases he earned at least $424,000 per hour! On top of these incredible earnings he has enjoyed a globetrotting lifestyle and a high level of international respect.
Will Bill be willing to give all of that up to see his wife become Secretary of State, and fourth in line to the office of President? The Secretary of State is a "Level 1" Cabinet position and as such currently carries an annual salary of $191,300 US.
Is it worth it for Bill to give up his lucrative public speaking career to support his wife's political ambitions? Hillary stood by her man and supported her husband through his darkest professional hours; is it safe to say he owes her one? Or could that debt prove to be too costly for Bill?
Hillary's earning potential as Secretary of State is 18.9% of Bill Clinton's speaking engagement fees. Can the Clinton's afford that kind of drop in family income? Will Hillary Clinton's salary as Secretary of State keep Bill living in the comfort he's grown accustomed to?
Over the weekend, former President Bill Clinton enthusiastically endorsed the prospect that his wife, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, might join the Obama administration as secretary of state. "If he decided to ask her and they did it together," the former president said, "I think she'll be really great as a secretary of state."Clinton delivered those remarks at an international economic symposium in Kuwait City sponsored by the National Bank of Kuwait, which said the former president would "share with a select audience his perspective on the issues likely to shape the future prospects of the region."
It is precisely that kind of paid speech, which Bill Clinton delivered 54 times last year for a total of $10.1 million in fees, that has complicated the vetting process that his wife is undergoing by the Obama transition team. "Whatever happens or doesn't happen is between Obama and her," Bill Clinton said.
That may be, but his post-presidential life as a globe-trotting philanthropist, business consultant and speech-giver poses the highest hurdle for Hillary Clinton to overcome if President-elect Barack Obama chooses to nominate her as secretary of state, according to aides of the Clintons and Obama.
The Obama transition team is focused on the wide array of Clinton's post-presidential activities, some details of which have not been made public.
This list includes the identity of most of the donors to his foundation, the source of some of his speaking fees - he has earned as much as $425,000 for a one-hour speech - and his work for the billionaire investor Ronald Burkle.
The vetting of Bill Clinton's myriad philanthropic and business dealings is "complicated, and it may be the complications that are causing hesitation on both sides," said Abner Mikva, one of Obama's closest supporters and a White House counsel during the Clinton administration."There would have to be full disclosure as to who all were contributors to his library and foundation. I think they'd have to be made public."
While aides to the president-elect declined Monday to discuss what sort of requirements would make it possible for Hillary Clinton to serve as secretary of state, they said Obama would not formally offer her the job unless he was satisfied that there would be no conflicts posed by Bill Clinton's activities abroad.
Associates of the Clintons said that Clinton was likely to have to make significant concessions and that he was inclined to do so. Among other things, they said, he would probably have to agree not to take money for speeches from foreign businesses that have a stake in the actions of the American government.
Another obvious issue, Democratic lawyers said, would be whether Bill Clinton's foundation should accept money from foreign governments, businesses or individuals for the foundation's philanthropic activities and if it should disclose those donors publicly.
"The problem is it's going to require some sacrifice by him," said a former Clinton aide who is not involved in the discussions but did not want to be identified because the talks are confidential. "If he's not willing to do that, it could blow up."

This Photo resemble the tiredness and the hard work he put up to help our country and our people to a new change and a new leader.

lately i keep hearing Bill's speech on the radio where he vows that he "did not have sexual relations with that woman." it seems that if people aren't pushing the opinion that he is a liability, they are at least taking the opportunity to make fun of him a bit more.
