Hofstra University Gang Rape Shocks Community and Students
At Hofstra University on Sunday night, a freshman was gang raped by five men in a bathroom while trying to retrieve a stolen cell phone and the attack has left the Long Island community and the student body shocked beyond belief.
Only one of the five men is a Hofstra student, and four are now in custody on rape and other charges, but one is still on the loose.
The rape occurred at around 3am, when the 18-year-old freshman was at a party and then left after dancing with one of the suspects, where he took her cellphone and left the club. She followed him outside into a dorm and an elevator.
The two got out at an undisclosed floor, where the man met an acquaintance. According to the police, the pair then bound the woman’s hands with rope and took her into a men’s room, where they sexually assaulted her.
Three men came in after and the girl pleaded for help but then they raped her as well.
It lasted for 'quite some time' and immediately after the girl reported the attack to campus security and the police were called. A man was picked up Sunday morning, and three others were arresed later.
Rondell Bedward, 21, one of the suspects is the only Hofstra student. The four other men were signed in as guests.
Students are the school are angry that they were not notified of the rape by the school, but that they had to find out about it from social media. Others were told by their parents.
students expressed shock and some anger, saying university officials should have done a better - and quicker - job of communicating to students that a rape had allegedly occurred at an on-campus dorm early Sunday morning.
The university says they told students via an internal web posting on Monday afernoon, but that is not a widely read site and word did not get out.
The University says that the alert text message system is only used when there is an 'imminent threat'.
