'homophobic' exhumation, The Plot thickens, coffin empty by World_Groove

This story ran back in August, and now the mystery deepens as the coffin is devoid of body.

The grave of the 19th Century Cardinal John Henry Newman did not contain his body, the Catholic Church has revealed.

Newman's body may have decomposed, as his coffin was not lead-lined. Its absence will not affect the progress of his cause in Rome, a spokesman said.

In a statement released on Saturday, Peter Jennings from the Fathers of the Birmingham Oratory, said: "Brass, wooden and cloth artefacts from Cardinal Newman's coffin were found.

Expecting two bodies and finding none. That must have taken them by complete surprise.

What I would like to know is if  buried "side by side" it was meant in the same coffin, or if it meant seperate coffins. And if seperate, did they check the other one ? As Ambrose his close friend whom he wanted to be buried "with" passed on some time earlier.

Ambrose Saint-John

Oratorian; b. 1815; d. at Edgbaston, Birmingham, 24 May, 1875

Not being an organization to be detoured once the collective mind is set, the process moves on.

"The absence of physical remains in the grave does not affect the progress of Cardinal Newman's cause in Rome."

Let our gravestone speak the truth

The Vatican accused of 'homophobic' exhumation

On their gravestone is a Latin inscription, "there from the shadow and images into the truth", which many people believe is a posthumous coming out.

The Catholic Church is under growing pressure to abandon the "homophobic" exhumation and reburial of the body of one its most famous cardinals, in defiance of his wish to lie for eternity next to the man he loved.

Cardinal Newman wrote shortly before his death: "I wish, with all my heart, to be buried in Father Ambrose St John's grave – and I give this as my last, my imperative will."

Gay rights campaigners have accused the Vatican – which has ordered the disinterment in the first step towards beatification – of attempting to cover up the sexuality of Cardinal John Henry Newman, who died in 1890.

Opposition to the reburial among some British Roman Catholics has been bolstered by a new poll organised by The Church Times which shows that a majority of Anglicans are now against the separation of Cardinal Newman, a former Anglican clergyman, and Father Ambrose St John who lived together as "husband and wife" for most of their late adult lives.

"They have been together for more than 100 years and the Vatican wants to disturb that peace to cover up the fact that Cardinal Newman loved a man. It's shameful, dishonourable betrayal of Newman by the gay-hating Catholic Church."

The Church Times' poll found that 80 per cent of responders were opposed to the Vatican's decision to move Newman's body.

80% against and still move forward. One has to wonder why take a poll if you are going to do something regardless.

Cardinal Newman and Ambrose St John share a memorial stone and are buried side by side in the same grave in Rednal, Worcestershire.
