Costa Rican President Oscar Arias has been asked to mediate the standoff between former Honduran president Manuel Zelaya and the current regime that overthrew him.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced today that Arias will support negotiations between Zelaya and interim president Robert Micheletti.

“I don’t want to prejudge what the parties themselves will agree to,” Clinton told reporters at the State Department after meeting with Zelaya. “We hope at the end of this mediation there will be a return of democratic constitutional order that is agreed to by all concerned.” She said talks would take place in Costa Rica.

On Sunday, Zelaya's attempt to return to Honduras by plane was thwarted by the Honduran military. One person was killed during the standoff. Thousands of pro-Zelaya demonstrators protested outside the presidential palace in the capital of Tegucigalpa.
