HK opposition wins at least 22 legislative seats:2008-09-08 01:50:02 -HONG KONG (AP) - Hong Kong's pro-democracy opposition has won more than a third of seats in legislative elections, retaining its veto power over major legislation.
Results being announced Monday show the opposition has claimed at least 22 of 60 seats in a legislative race. The key threshold for pro-democracy parties was a total of 21 seats _ a number that would allow them to block major legislation that requires a two-thirds majority for passage. The pro-democracy camp had been expected to suffer a setback in the election after China gave a timetable for democratic reform in Hong Kong last year.
Half of Hong Kong's 30 legislative seats are elected directly by voters, with the rest chosen by special interest groups.

With a very low outcome, legislative poll close in Hong Kong.

2008-09-07 17:14:02 - HONG KONG (AP) - Polls have closed amid a low turnout in Hong Kong's legislative election that is expected to deliver a blow to the Chinese territory's pro-democracy opposition.
Poll workers started counting votes late Sunday after some 15 hours of voting. Voter turnout is expected to hit the lowest mark in 10 years. About 40 percent of registered voters cast ballots about an hour before polls closed, compared to a final turnout of nearly 56 percent four years ago
