Horton Hears a Who...

Do you remember the Dr Seuss book Horton hears a Who?  Its plot is extremely simple, yet, alarming profound…

Horton the Elephant struggles to protect a microscopic community from his neighbors who refuse to believe it exists.

Hmm, that is a little too close to home…especially for us here in Israel.  For years, our leaders have been crying out to a deaf world about the atomic threat of Iran, situated only 1250 short miles from us.

For years we have been warning our allies that this Iranian threat is not to be swept under the carpet…that “if you don’t bother with it, it will go away”.

And yet, nothing has been done! It has been a cancer cell that has been allowed to grow until the 4th stage of the illness.  Just days or months away, Iran will be nuclearly armed and ready for battle.  And the world looks on with disdain and that is it.

Tell me when Ahmadinejad ever changed his character.  When he ever said “oh, I was fooling, we love Israel”?  Am I the only one who is seeing that something here is not right?

Now, to add insult to injury, Iran has announced some new news this morning:

“Iran says will build 10 new uranium enrichment plants

Islamic republic continues to provoke IAEA, ordering plans for 10 new facilities to be built within two months 'in order to serve country's electricity needs.' White House: Iran isolating itself

Latest Update:

11.30.09, 00:51 / Israel News

The Iranian government approved a plan Sunday to build 10 industrial scale uranium enrichment facilities, a dramatic expansion of the program in defiance of UN demands it halt enrichment.

The decision comes only days after the UN nuclear watchdog agency censured Iran over its program and demanded it halt the construction of a newly revealed enrichment facility. “

And nobody is listening.  Nobody is paying attention to the small nation that sees things as they really are instead of “what they can be”.  Folks, last time I checked, we have not attained Utopia or Nirvana.  There is still war and bad guys out there! And they intend to do bad things!

For the past few days, I have noticed conversations that have cropped up here living in Israel that I thought I would never hear as an American….

In my Hebrew class, used as an example:

“if you sleep well, then you won’t worry about the War.”

From my 62-year old native Israeli friend:

“You can never tell what come in the spring…you always will have to prepare for war”

From a soldier equivalent to a navy seal:

“I am grateful that the bombs that are flying to us land somewhere other than near me” (speaking about Gaza)

And yet, the world…like Neville Chamberlain, some 70 years ago, wants to proclaim “peace in our time”  Well folks, we knew the outcome then, and it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out the outcome now.  This regime is bent on destruction….ours.  Yours and mine.  He will not stop at Israel.

Denying its desire is sheer stupidity. Assuming that negotiations will work has not, nor will it work.  Assuming that a destructive regime is just like us is like assuming that a scorpion will someday be a rabbit.

I live just 5 kilometers away from a group of people that I have no trouble realizing they would love to kill me, just because I am Jewish and an Israeli.  No matter how much I love them or think of them differently, their intent is still the same.

So why is it so hard for the rest of the world to figure it out?  If someone like Dr Seuss can write a children’s book about it, why can’t people other than a 5 year old see it????
