How do you say "My Lai" in Farsi?
I don't know what the truth of this situation was. Truth is, virtually none of us in North America do.Was it simply a terrorist action or was it a terrorist ambush? We can't tell now and often can't tell after the fact..
MIAMI (AFP) — US Marines "acted appropriately" during a firefight in Afghanistan last year which left up to 10 civilians dead and triggered angry protests, the military said in a statement Friday.
Astatement from the US Marine Corps Central Command in Florida saidafter reviewing evidence from a court of inquiry, the marines hadfollowed established procedures after coming under attack in easternAfghanistan on March 4, 2007.
Lieutenant General Samuel Helland said a Marines convoy had acted in"accordance with the rules of engagement" during the incident, whichwas later condemned by Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
What I do know though, is that while people - us an them - hardly ever know what "the truth" is in a situation like this you can be damned sure that they know what "appears" to be the truth. And that appearence will be felt first as increased hatred to the U.S. abroad and soon after as increased actions against America and increased anarchy and misery for the Afghans.

Lieutenant General Samuel Helland said a Marines convoy had acted in"accordance with the rules of engagement" during the incident, whichwas later condemned by Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
Hellandsaid troops in a five-vehicle convoy had responded to a "complexattack", after being rocked by a car bomb and small arms fire.
A Marine spokesman said the court of inquiry's findings of facts, recommendations and opinions would not be released.
As the convening authority, Helland can ignore the court's findings. Soit was unknown what the basis was for the general's decision.

The statement said three Marines -- Major Fred Galvin, CaptainRobert Olsen and Captain Vincent Noble -- would face "appropriateadministrative action" as a result of manning and training issuesbrought to light during the inquiry.
The US Marine Corps hasfaced scrutiny for a string of cases involving civilian deaths duringdeployments to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Mikasi, I like this story. It's good stuff. Though Farsi is not as common a Afghan language, the more common would be Dari!

Dang. And I tried looking up the major languages of Afghanistan and Farsi weighed in at 40%. Oh well, maybe next language group.

Hey I only know because at one time I was required to learn a few phrases in Dari languages, man that was tough. Did you know Canoe, Hut and Wife all sound exactly the same? Who knew? .... oh yeah the afghan guy and his wife did, when I asked him if he needed assistance with his Hut, as it was looking a tad rundown, actually more like a hovel. Hey, you live and learn....how to explain yourself to your superiors!
