How does nice-guy Rick Santorum qualify?

Very well

He is warming up to Iowans, and that doesn’t surprise me. He is a kind person who carries some religious views that some people like, while others might see it as baggage. He is a Republican with one foot in conservatism and a slight lean to the middle. That spells, unelectable in the general election, probably.

More than that, how does he rate?

In my book, How to Select an American President ©2011 James A. George, All Rights Reserved, here is how I qualified him.

His score is 50/92 and this is very good, though with the following caveats:

1.       The son of a government employee, Rick Santorum is a lifer politician.

2.       He lacks commercial business experience as a CEO and has never been a Governor or government executive.

3.       He did not serve in the military.

He is academically able and well qualified with degrees in Law and an MBA.

Mitt Romney’s presidential candidate score is 51. President Obama’s score is 54 and with incumbency, 65. On qualifications, Santorum is comparable with Mitt Romney.

“Rick Santorum is a seasoned politician whom appears to have had political ambitions from the outset of his career. That is consistent with having a passion for politics that is believed to be a critical success factor for those seeking the office of president. Santorum is known for being an arch conservative, though political ideology is not a factor in determining qualifications as you know.

A "nice guy"? Ha ha. This guy is anything but nice. When laws were being changed so that working women had to take their children to work with them, he said, "It's good that people struggle." Don't be fooled by his facade, Jim. The guy's a complete shark, and if he knows how to play nice guy that's just one of his tricks. On a related subject, many guys who know how to appear nice in public are total bastards, and I know quite a few of them.

Yes, it is a facade. I would not vote for any Republican. His score is 1 point behind that of Romney by my method. Both are 14-15 points behind the President in qualifications. I think that will matter to voters even if they don't score the way I do. The margin of error favors the incumbent Obama.
