How Mexico can flourish
If Mexico had a strong democratic government that could control crime, then it could become an attractive retirement destination for Americans. If Mexico became an attractive retirement destination for Americans, the country could energize prosperity thus strengthening the government making it a safer place.
If Mexico and the United States continue to become more homogenous as it is trending to be, the two nations can increase synergy between the two to optimize application of resources, capital, materials, people, and technology to become a powerhouse competitor in the global market. Therefore, Mr. President, why not make Mexico a focal point in a strategy to revitalize America?
The headlines are always about battling drug cartels, which is necessary, though where is the headline about developing and expanding markets together and becoming a destination for retiring Americans – a place they might afford?

tgillman@dallasnews.comWASHINGTON – Drug cartels have expanded their war for control of Mexico faster than the U.S. has been able to pump in aid.
In the time needed for roughly 18,000 Mexicans to die in the violence raging just south of the Rio Grande, the United States has delivered about a fifth of the $1.3 billion promised in late 2007 under a security pact known as the Mérida Initiative.
Officials on both sides of the border say Mérida has fostered major strides in U.S.-Mexican cooperation, but complaints about the pace of spending were rampant long before last weekend's murders of three people with ties to the U.S. consulate in Ciudad Juárez. Now, policymakers in both countries see an urgent need to expand and improve the aid.
"There's a tremendous amount of frustration that we simply aren't taking these national security challenges seriously," said Rep. Silvestre Reyes, D-El Paso, a former Border Patrol chief and chairman of the Intelligence committee.”

If you want to build a nation, start in your own hemisphere, and right next door. Replace your priorities.

Mexico needs a stimulus program of its own. It's got to give incentives to businesses to hire. Maybe less taxes and less regulation would give businesses the room they need to hire. It has a lot of natural resources, farmland, and a good labor force. It can draw more tourists if they get the drug war under control. It has the ingredients you need for a successful economy. Who wants to invest in Mexico right now with all that's going on there? They've got to get the violence under control first. If the drug cartels are closed and the government does things to stimulate the economy like making things easier for businesses and funds projects that hire lots of workers, Mexico can be a lot better quickly. In a situation with less violence, more people would invest in projects in Mexico, along with the government, which would lead to more jobs for citizens. It can even lead to Mexicans in the U.S. going back because of all the opportunities there.
