Hurricane Guillermo formed over the eastern Pacific Ocean on Friday, far off the coast of Mexico, according to the US National Hurricane Center.

At around 8 a.m. PDT, the center of Hurricane Guillermo was located about 1180 miles west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California peninsula. The hurricane had sustained winds of 75 mph, and was moving west near 15 mph.

The hurricane was expected to gain power on Friday before weakening on Saturday as it moved over cooler waters in a west-northwesterly direction, the center said.

The five-day forecast for Guillermo’s possible track shows the center of the storm about 300 miles northeast of Hawaii on Aug. 18, as a tropical depression, the agency said.

While hurricane strength begins the measure at 74 mph, a tropical depression has a maximum of 38 mph. Between 39 to 73 mph, the systems are classified as tropical storms.
