Tropical storm Ida became hurricane Ida overnight, making a category 1 hurricane landfall near eastern Nicaragua early Thursday morning. It is now heading for Honduras where it is expected to weaken. There are now speculations Ida might be headed for Mexico's resort town of Cancun once it gets past Honduras by the middle of next week.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people in Nicaragua were evacuated.

Soldiers had evacuated more than 1,100 people from the area and erected 53 temporary shelters, said general Oscar Perez Casar, the head of civil defence forces.

The hurricane brought in strong winds and heavy rain as was expected.

The category one hurricane packed winds of 120 kilometres per hour and struck between Bluefields and Puerto Cabezas, the US-based National Hurricane Centre said in its 1500 GMT advisory.

Property damage is being reported, but no injuries or deaths from the hurricane have been reported yet.

The latest update from the US National Hurricane Center says that Ida has now weakened back to tropical storm, but heavy rainfall continues over much of northern and eastern Nicaragua. The heavy rain (expected to be as much as 25 inches) may produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides, according to the update.

It is believed Ida can regain strength off Mexico's Yucatan peninsula by Monday. Cancun resorts and oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico could be affected.
