Remember the time when Indian Films ( Bollywood) were rediculed as films with "no story" "Ding ding ding" "song and dance" etc etc., all kinds of names, I can go on forever, and it wasn't too long ago.All of a sudden they are the focus of every film festival in the world and all major ones at that.
Are they making better films -- NO ..
Are they making different films -- NO..
Have they changed the form of film making -- NO
What gives then?
MONEY MONEY MONEY
They are making a lot more money and India is Rich today so their films are worth a lot more and bring in a lot of money. So count on TIFF to run after them for their commercial films.
Same is true for Hollywood ; You dont have to make good films say the organizers of Tiff ; you have to bring a lot of stars to the festival.
Toronto Interational Film Festival pride itself in promoting independent films thats what they write on their website. But its a star fest of commercial cinema. "we're committed to discovering new voices in international and Canadian cinema, in addition to hosting the world's most celebrated filmmakers and talent. Drawing inspiration from the rich diversity of the city of Toronto, our programmers search the world for the highest achievements in film art, for new ideas in cinema and for movies that will surprise, delight and enlighten our audiences." says Cameron Bailey , the co Director of TIFF on their website.
At the same time They are bringing "Singh is King" gimme a break; a film for the braindead but commercially successful and don't even get me started on Galas at the T|IFF,-- all star oriented events.I feel sorry for Toronto and the film world when you go and beg commercial film companies to get the films that are successful in selling a lot of toys. You are not promoting film, you are just their advertisemnet bill board paid for by the stars arrival at their events.
I am washing my hands of this festival THEY WILL NOT BE GETTING MY HARD EARNED MONEY.
Good Bye Toronto International Flake Festival.
