In a rain-marred ICC Champions Trophy final which was reduced to 20-overs each, India put up a spirited performance to beat hosts England by five runs to lift the trophy at Edgbaston here on Sunday.
In a thrilling final which went down to the final ball, Indian bowlers restricted England to 124 for eight after they posted 129 for seven on the scoreboard in 20 overs.
Chasing 130, England made a poor start as they lost the wicket of skipper Alastair Cook (2) in the second over of the innings as the scorecard showed 3 for 1.
R Ashwin took a brilliant catch off Umesh Yadav to get rid of Cook.
Jonathan Trott (20), Joe Root (7) and Ian Bell (13) soon followed them as England were reduced to 46 for 4 in 8.4 overs.
As India was slowly drifting the match towards their favour, Eoin Morgan (33) and Ravi Bopara (30) stabilized England's innings by adding 64 runs in the fifth wicket partnership.
With the two English batsmen slowly cruising the side towards the target, Indian pacer Ishant Sharma produced a brilliant over to turn the tide in India's favour.
Sharma, who gave away 36 runs in his four overs, picked up the wickets of Morgan and Bopara in consecutive deliveries to give a jolt to England's dream of winning the cup.
Ravindra Jadeja, who was adjudged the Man of the Match, bowled out Jos Buttler (0) and Tim Bresnan (2) was run out by Rohit Sharma as England was further reduced to 113 for eight in 18.4 overs.
Needing 15 runs off last six balls, Ashwin bowled tight as India clinched their second ICC Champions Trophy, months after the country was hit by the Indian Premier League (IPL) spot-fixing scandal.
India had shared the trophy with Sri Lanka in 2002.
Stuart Broad (7*) and James Tredwell (5*) remained not out till the end.
Ashwin, Jadeja and Sharma took two wickets each.
Earlier, India posted 129 for seven after the match started six hours behind schedule due to rain.
Indian batsmen fell like nine pins in the final clash as Virat Kohli remained the top-scorer for the World Champions with his 43.
Kohli and Jadeja (33) added 47 runs in the sixth wicket partnership which helped India post 129 for seven on the scoreboard.
Kohli hammered four boundaries and a six in his crucial knock.
Shikhar Dhawan contributed 31 with his willow.
Rohit Sharma (9), Dinesh Karthik (6), Suresh Raina (1) and MS Dhoni (0) failed to deliver on Sunday.
Bopara remained the pick of the English bowlers as he took three wickets by giving away 20 runs in his four overs.
